Got some Adsa Eden Falls water....

Post by chris172 » Mon Feb 03, 2014 1:21 pm

Got some Adsa Eden Falls water for mixing with Starsan as recommended along with the Tesco one but not got a Tesco near.

Slightly confused now as the bottles say that it has a Ph of 6.... thought as long as the Ph was 3 or below with Starsan it would be OK.... or does the mixing turn it Ph 3? haven't got a Ph meter yet but think it might be a worthwhile investment.

any advice gratefully received.

Star san is acidic and will lower the ph of the water

It should be fine

Depends on tha alkalinity. If it's high the StarSan won't work, it'll turn milky as soon as you add it. If it stays quite clear you should be OK.
Best wishes

Good call. I have been using 5L bottles of Tesco Ashbeck spring which looks like it's the same source as Asda's Eden Falls. But, like you there's an Asda but no Tesco nearby. If they've got 5L bottles, perfect. Just wob 8ml of starsan in and the job's done. Starsan in Ashbeck never went even remotely cloudy so I expect Eden Falls will be the same.

Ashbeck has in Mg/L (Well, my bottle does)

Calcium 10
Magnesium 2.5
Sodium 9
Potassium 2
Bicarbonate 25
Chloride 12
Sulphate 10
Nitrate 11
Tot dry residue 80
PH 6.2

As you can see it's near enough the same as Eden Falls that when you factor in any natural variation - it is the same stuff. :D
If I had all the money I've spent on drink...I'd spend it on drink.

Hi
I'm using starsan for the 1st time for my first ever bottling sesh next week!, asda is closest to me so can anybody please confirm that eden falls water from asda is perfect(or more than good enough) to use with no-rinse starsan.

cheers

I made up my StarSan mixture at the beginning of Feb Just as I posted originally. Still have a small bottle full of it mixed with the StarSan and it's still completely clear!!!

Hope that helps...

The criterion is the pH. If it's less than 3.5 it's OK. Mine settles out at approx 2.5 using Ashbeck.
Best wishes

Hi, thanks for the replies,

yesterday I added 8ml of starsan to a 5ltr bottle of eden falls water,

im a little unsure at the minute after 24 hours the bottle of water is transparent and relatively clear, but not crystal clear as it was before adding the starsan, is it normal to have a slight cloudiness, a gave the mixture a real good shake at the beginning, could this be way its a little cloudy, should it settle out and become crystal clear? is it ok to use if its a little cloudy?

I have no ph testing strips to test with.

cheers

Just ebay some strips, they are pennies off ebay.

I'm sure it will be fine though. I always add 10-12ml just to be sure

I had already ordered some cheap strips of ebay(they should arrive during next week) I used a small syringe to measure a 8 ml dose, is it really ok to add a couple of ml extra and im wondering if maybe I slightly under measured(as im not sure how accurate the syringe I used was) could that be what is causing the cloudiness?
thanks

I don't dick around with a syringe. 1/4 us oz as marked on the bottle is 7-8ml. So I just use that and a touch more.

Is that ok? Well I'm not dead and my beers good....

I filled up an empty 5ltr bottle just with my cold tap water yesterday and added the same amount of starsan(8-9ml) and its stayed crystal clear [-o< , so at least from now on I wont have to "dick around" with buying distilled mineral water.

My water here is hard as nails, so Stasan is always cloudy when mixed with it. I now use the 2L Tesco Ashbeck water too and it is as clear as a bell when left pre-mixed for swilling and in a spray bottle for, well, spraying stuff....

Agree though, it is a bit of a faff not being able to use tap water, but its not that bad as a 2L bottle will probably last me around 5 brews.
