Well I have just had my first attempt at re-pitching slurry from my last brew yesterday. How long should it take to show clear signs of fermenting?
I did a brew and bottle on the same day so the yeast slurry was just harvested from the fermenter into a serialized container and stored briefly on the window sill at 20c. MrMalty calculator default settings suggested 117ml so I pitched about 120 to 130ml.

Problem with repitching Slurry
Re: Problem with repitching Slurry
I guess you have fermented right out, if you bottled the last batch, so the yeast will take a little while to wake up. You should see signs of fermentation at 24 hours (+/- 12 hours).

So it could take up to 36 hours to show any real signs of life, amazing! Thanks.Rubbery wrote:I guess you have fermented right out, if you bottled the last batch, so the yeast will take a little while to wake up. You should see signs of fermentation at 24 hours (+/- 12 hours).
I forgot to mention that the yeast was S04 and the batch it was gathered from had fermented down to 1019 giving around 67% attenuation by my calculation. It is also in a temperature controlled fridge at 20c.

Re: Problem with repitching Slurry
Mine took approx 42 hours to get going when I re-pitched slurry 2 weeks ago. I was nervous by then! Lol
Edit: Mine was half of a W34-70 cake.

I didn't measure mine but must have dumped in considerably more than 120ml as I had a full Krausen in about 12 hours.
I probably massively over pitched but some people siphon straight onto the old yeast cake and use the whole lot. The beer tastes great though.

Panic over. A fair fermentation is taking place after 36 hours. TG.

Report back on how it performs the second time around. I am often finding both wet and dry yeast giving better performance on second and third pitches.

That's a common observation. I think it's related to under pitching healthy yeast initially.john luc wrote:Report back on how it performs the second time around. I am often finding both wet and dry yeast giving better performance on second and third pitches.
