Crossmyloof yeast

Post by m_rawdin » Sun May 28, 2017 7:03 pm

Has anyone tried the crossmyloof yeast you can buy on eBay? It's pretty reasonably priced but I'm slightly reluctant to use yeast I've never tried before.

I've used the Californian yeast once so far. Focculation is lower than S04 / Nottingham but the yeast performed well and left a clean tasting beer. Would use again.

Yeah I was gonna give the kolsch yeast a go cuz all the other kolsch yeasts I've seen are about twice the price.

It's a shame they don't sell grain as well...

I've used the Real Ale yeast twice now and it's very good. It started fermenting in less than 6hrs from pitching and was very active. I would recommend it. I did follow the instruction and added the yeast to around half a cup full of tepid water (out of the kettle) before hand.

I often use safale 05, do they sell a yeast close to this as I notice they have 3 ale yeasts?

Yeah, there US Pale's pretty close to US 05 in my opinion. A pretty neutral yeast that clears quickly and compacts very well too. And the prices are as keen as mustard ;)

You get what you pay for. And, yes, dried yeast is always 'neutral'

Slightly cheaper if you find them on Facebook.

Used the Kolsch yeast to make Altbier on the assumption that it should work as a German ale yeast. It wasn't very successful. Attenuation not high enough. Hops taste too forward. Still ok beer though.

Their website link on facebook still directs to an empty ebay page. Seems rather strange; I can't believe the festival they were at has been going on for 'this' long.

EDIT: Hmm, I think their link is just rubbish; turns out there is stock on ebay here. The prices look good but sadly there isn't anything to tempt me wrt British ale styles; could be worth keeping a few cheap packs in for emergencies perhaps.

You message them on fb to get your discount. The prices are at the top of their page :)

Yeah, a bit long-winded but presumably must be okay for those who still do facebook; price seems to be the main attraction so avoiding ebay fees may well justify it. Theres currently nothing which tempts me, but still good to have finally found their ebay listing though, in case the range increases.

I have done around 10 brews with the US pale ale and i really like it. Ferments in a few days and after 2 weeks in the FV its pretty clear. Works well in a dry stout or BIPA and their kolsch yeast is very good as well. I do have liquid yeast in the fridge but found myself using this instead.
