Campden Tablets/Sodium Metabisulphite

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

OK, the chlorine's history. Now what about the flourine? I happen to live in one of 2 or 3 countries in the EU that routinely flourinate the municipal water supplies. I think that parts of Birmingham also have flourinated supplies. Is flourine anything to be concerned about from a brewing context? Lets leave aside the bone wasting and possible links with cancer............

It's quite difficult to remove. You can get special water filters that will remove it. As far as I know it's added as a fluoride salt of some type. You wouldn't want to use fluorine gas directly. It's nasty.

I don't think it has any flavour tainting problems in beer AFAIK.

Curiously enough tea has fairly high concentrations of fluoride.
