Bru'n Water help please
Bru'n Water help please
I'm trying to use Bru'n Water for the first time, and I'd like a little help.
I finally received a copy of my water report a week or two back, and I've only just sat down to work with it. I may be misunderstanding it, but I don't think it has the info that Bru'n Water is asking for.
Can anyone help me out on this?

Litany For Beer
I must drink the Beer.
Beer is the mind-killer.
Beer is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my Beer.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the Beer has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Re: Bru'n Water help please
That pdf appears corrupted. Try having a look at the BrunWater walk through... take a good 30 minutes to play around with it. It rapidly makes sense.....
Your water report may just lack alkalinity readings which can be obtained through a Salifert test kit.

I've edited the link, hopefully that makes s difference.

That report doesn't seem terribly useful, I suggest you spend a few quid on a proper report from Wallybrew and a Salifert alkalinity test kit if you want to start messing with your water. At least then you'll know your start point.
In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.
Re: Bru'n Water help please
you can try mph water calculator too, i prefer it to brun water
http://homebrewingphysics.blogspot.co.u ... water.html
incidentally there is a bit more info on your water here, for calcium, magnesium and hardness as caco3
http://www.scottishwater.co.uk/~/media/ ... 0data.ashx
you could also ask at Lerwick brewery what they do for water too, assuming you have the same supply of course

Re: Bru'n Water help please
Thanks for the help/advice.
I'll think about asking the Lerwick Brewery, but the first/only time I enquired about something with them, I was pretty much ignored, so not sure if I'll bother again.

Re: Bru'n Water help please
Looking at the report, it doesn't look like a huge variation over the year in terms of maximum and minimum readings but you are relying on average values across the year. Like others have said, you're better off getting a report from Wallybrew and seeing what the water out of your own tap is coming out at. You could do it a couple times a year to see if there's a lot of variability.

Totally agree, then use the calculator in this site, it's more suited to British water than Bru'n water.keith1664 wrote:That report doesn't seem terribly useful, I suggest you spend a few quid on a proper report from Wallybrew and a Salifert alkalinity test kit if you want to start messing with your water. Re: Bru'n Water help please
Just a quick reply to say that they actually got back to me with info on their Water report.
We get our water from the same place, mine just has to spend a little extra time in a pipe. Next step is figuring out if/what I need to correct, and the best way to go about it.
pH 6.29
Nitrate <1
Calcium 19
Magnesium 3
Chloride 45.91
Sulphate 47.91
Alkalinity (CaCO3) 22
Targets for pale and bitters should be
Calcium 180 - 220
Magnesium 0 - 50
Chloride 150 - 250
Sulphate 250 - 450
Alkalinity 20 - 60
We add premixed salts called DWB to our beers (not lagers) to up the calcium, as this is important for the yeast.

That looks like something straight out of a Murphy's recommendation.

Hardly Bru'n Water.
