Is this normal after boiling water?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Is this normal after boiling water?

Post by mbrew » Mon Oct 03, 2016 5:29 pm

Hi,
Last week I boiled 25ltr of my hard tap water for about 1/2 hr with a tsp of gypsum added, racked it off 24hrs later into a barrel.

Just gone to use it & found these brown flakes in the water, they look like wings so my first thought was that some insects got in at some point.

I'm hoping its just something that has precipitated out of the water but thought it would be better to check on here first, I was expecting anything that did to be white.

Cant see your pic, or get mine to show so not sure whats going on?

That's what I'm hoping, if you zoom in they look like they have veins in them which is what got me concerned, I was expecting anything that came out to be white & hard.

I even thought they could be grain husks but cant think of any way they could have got in there.

That is , without doubt in my mind, old hop flowers. Probably stuck in the tap or some other hidey hole. It's not inorganic precipitate or wings. I sometimes get a piece of hop flower appear here and there.

Good call & would make sense, looking at the picture again & think you're spot on.

Although I thought I'd cleaned the kettle out well they could well have been stuck in the tap from last time & then softened when I boiled the water last week.

A lesson to be learnt there!

Yup, we have a winner, found some more in the tap.

Pretty obvious now so a bit annoyed I didn't sus it myself :bonk

Tap now stripped, cleaned & soaking in bleach, will brew tomorrow instead.

Thanks for the help.
