Bad salts
Greetings all, does anyone know if it's possible for the salts we use for water correction to go off? The reason i ask is the used grain from the mash tun smelled like butter thats the only way i can describe it. I'm using a new 25kg bag of grain received yesterday. I haven't checked any use by dates yet so i'll check that tomorrow.

Re: Bad salts
I would say if they're not lumpy from moisture absorption then no.

Yes, if there's no moisture in there then they'll be fine. I've been using Gypsum and Calcium Chloride from the same pots for about five years.
Best wishes

Re: Bad salts
I think I'll make a brew using tap water only and start from there. That'll be in about a week once I have transferred the last brew into the secondary. I think it may take more than one brew to nail this, either way I'll let you know. Just checked my salts and found 4 out of date:- Irish moss 05/16, protofloc:- 06/15, Yeast vit:- 06/16, Gypsum:- 03/17. Although ''this may not be the problem obviously I'll get them changed.
Re: Bad salts
I doubt if any of them are out of date. The dates marked are pretty arbitrary. If they have been stored well they will be fine.
