Good husbandry of the pH probe is essential for good operation and long life. Irrespective of the meter brand the pH probe is the critical item. Here is a good website that will give good advice on making pH determinations and the use and storage of probes.
Many on this website have a Volcraft pH meter, as I also do. I am trialing a low cost alternative pH probe from eBay and will report in due course.

Definitely doesn't work. Shame, coz it's probably worth reading.

Re: Care and Use of pH probes
As an aside in the absence of the link: When I first bought my voltcraft pH meter it was with some doubt about the running costs wrt probes. But so far (in the occasional use of a homebrewing environment), simply washing and drying the probe after use and storing it in the provided solution seems to have been sufficient. I'm pleased to say that it has lasted years; whilst calibration and settling time indicate a little ageing, it is still working very acceptably.
I always cool to 20c before measuring though; partly because I don't accept the Automatic Temperature compensation, and partly because I understand it is kinder on the probe than hot wort.
