Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
Looking forward to this one! Got the water heating up at the mo.
Hops will be a mixture of Northern Brewer and Hallertau, yeast will be a slurry of White Labs Czech Budejovice fermented at 9c.
Recipe is tweaked from Brewing Classic Styles, only i'm switching the hops a bit and swapping carafa in for black malt.

Re: Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
Looking forward to hearing how you get on with this. I'm also tempted to try something similar but although I enjoyed a bottle of a commercial rauchbier I'm not sure if I want gallons of the stuff. Which is one of the reasons why I intend brewing a smoked weizen. My thinking being it will be a bit less intense.

Was it Schlenkerla with the gothic typeface?
I love that stuff. After three bottles your urine starts to smell of smoke. Bonus!
Mine won't be as smoky I expect.

Perhaps you should experiment by eating a jar of beetroot at the same time and take a sample to the doctor's.mysterio wrote: After three bottles your urine starts to smell of smoke. Bonus!

Yes it was Schlenkerla. I got mine from http://www.drinkswell.co.uk/product/374 ... d_%29.html
in Ripon market place. A good place to pay a visit if anyones in the area.
Might try the rauchbier & beetroot trick when I have my work medical

Re: Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
I sense a trip up to Ripon coming on. How is Bedale these days? I still own a house in Little Crakehall, 20 years since I lived in it though.

Well I never!!Brotherton Lad wrote:I sense a trip up to Ripon coming on. How is Bedale these days? I still own a house in Little Crakehall, 20 years since I lived in it though.
Bedale's probably just the same as when you were here last, I haven't been in the Bay Horse, Crakehall for ages. My favourite spot is the Buck Inn, Thornton Watlass.
A trip to Drinkswell in Ripon is recommended

Re: Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
Just having an IPA while the wort chills down to lager temps.
Did a batch sparge on this one, I think i'm a convert. With a pump I had the whole sparge done in about 5 minutes.

Re: Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
Looks good, can I ask why only 40ish% rauchmalz? I've been thinking about doing a Schlenkerla clone and that is almost all Rauchmalz from what I can gather.
Re: Brewday 24th March - Rauchbier
I'm not very experienced with the style of beer... probably best to start on the conservative side I suppose. I can always do another one.
Plus the stuff is pretty expensive.
