My First All Grain Brew
My First All Grain Brew
Here's some photos from my first all grain brew, the recipe is here -> viewtopic.php?f=5&t=41857
Taking the temp of the grain.
Beginners luck, I was aiming for 65°C...
Running of the first batch of the mash.
I was supposed to get 10.9l...
Running the second batch off seemed to take an age, much, much longer than the first batch:
Total wort in the boiler was ~22.5l, should have been 21.8l.
13g Cascade and 7g Simcoe @ 90 mins
22g Cascade and 11g Simcoe @ 20 mins
Boiler off. 26g Cascade and 26g Simcoe in for a 20 min steep...
Mmmmmmm, spent hops...
Yeast starter made with Rogue Ales Pacman yeast, recovered from a bottle of Captian Sig's Northwestern Ale.
I was supposed to get 15l from the mash and boil, plus around 600ml from the yeast starter, so either my boil off or loss to hops was well out...
I'll be generous and say 1045...
Tastes very sweet with some astringency, so it appears to have worked so far!
For my first attempt I'm quite pleased, but lots of knowledge and experience still to gain...
Cheers,
Bob.

Hi Bob,
Really glad it went well!
Not sure if its apparent to you, but I can't see any of your images. Normally this is because people paste a web page URL instead of the actual images's URL, but in this case I tried opening them manually and still get an access denied type of message - are they in a private area or something?
Cheers

It's happily fermenting away:llannige wrote:How's she looking @ the moment,anything to report?
I'm going to dry hop it this evening and then probably rack to secondary on Monday evening.
Cheers,
Bob.

Re: My First All Grain Brew
I believe (correct me if I'm wrong anyone) that you're better off dry-hopping in secondary. Certainly that's what I did on the one occassion I've done it so far.
Re: My First All Grain Brew
Nice pics, Bob. Sounds like the day went well.
You probably had a bit of a stuck mash during your second run-off. When you added the second lot of water, did you stir the grains again and let them settle?

Re: My First All Grain Brew
Yes I stirred and left it for 15, minutes. The grains didn't look like they were all at the bottom instead of in suspension like the first batch.Hogarth wrote:Nice pics, Bob. Sounds like the day went well.
