I bought a small packet of these hops and am wondering how best to use them.
I'm tempted to make a SMaSH with them but what could I expect?
Anyone used Australian Summer Hops?
Re: Anyone used Australian Summer Hops?
Well there's synchronicity for you.
I'll be using them myself tomorrow for the first time so give me a month or so and I'll be able to tell you!
Not a SMaSH because I like a bit of sweetness but I'm planning a 40L brew
6kg pale
500g Caramalt
200g Wheat malt
then 25g of Summer at 90,60,15,10,5 and 0 minutes. Holding back 50g for dry hopping.
Should be 4.2% and 27 IBU's.
I'm aiming for something quite summery!

Mash Liquor: 12.3 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 83 %

On reflection i would use other hops to bitter and most of the summer in the last 20mins.I did dry hop with 50g but i am not happy with just dumping them on top as i dont feel i am getting the aroma i should so have just started to stick the hops in tights and sink them into the beer.Time will tell if it helps me get what i want.
I was a little let down when i first tried the beer and it was quite cold from the shed and seemed quite bland, but i left a few indoors a couple of weeks later and it turned the corner into a very nice beer that was best surved at room temp. The hops are quite subtle with a smooth bitterness.
I will be brewing with them again soon.
Cheers Dean.
