Bath Ales Clone?

Post by Belter » Mon Oct 29, 2012 7:48 pm

I've always been a massive fan of Bath ales. I'd rate them over the majority of other ales I've ever tried.

I assume their distinct flavour is due to having their own yeast? It doesn't mention anything on the bottle and despite living down the road for four years i'd wrongly assumed Bath Ales was actually in Bath and not Bristol.

I'd be very interested in brewing a clone of any of their ales. No-where seems to do one. They've been around for 15 years I'd have thought GW would have worked one out by now :-)

Back in my bristol days I drank a lot of Zero Degrees also. Can't find any clones of theirs either. Their IPA is amazing.

Cheers

Not tried any of these recipes but here are a 2 Gems & 1 Spa. Gem is probably my favourite beer so I will certainly be trying to clone it some time.

I bottled a biab Gem clone about 2 weeks ago and it's so close it's unbelievable!
I did a simpler version of the Gem with just Maris Otter, Wheat and two EKG additions. It's a bit lighter in colour but has more mouthfeel.
Really, really close to the original.
I used Danstar Nottingham yeast.

Anyone got any ideas on yeast? Hopville seems to recommend S-04. I doubt Bath Ales use S-04?

So the wheat is just wheat? Not torrified or malt?

Nice one chap. Missed that thread! :D
Will give it a try sometime. The chocolate malt must be what gives it that little bit of colour I'm missing.

To be honest although he's had word from the brewer that recipe put into Beersmith seems way off? The EBC is nowhere near as dark as I remember drinking it. I've searched the net it comes up as 36 on some forums. I have it listed as 17 with these percentages. Also the gravity should be 1.046 but I'm at 1.038.

It's stronger in bottles than it is on draught, so that may explain the difference?
