AG#24 - East Anglian IPA
I managed to fit this brew in yesterday when the opportunity arose a short notice, after SWMBO had a change of plans which meant a Brewday was on the cards
I'm not ashamed to say that this brew is inspired by Greene King's East Coast IPA, as this brew might be below average from a bottle, but IMO it is very good from the keg, and I have found myself drinking it all night when I have a rare night out in my local in Colchester.
I just want a refreshing session strength IPA, that should deliver a decent hop burp!
The Brewday went fairly well, apart from a very slow draining mash again, that played havoc with my decision to have another bash at fly sparging. I had to keep switching off my pump to avoid totally flooding the grain bed, but it was worth the effort, as I ended up with some lovely clean wort from them mash tun in the end.
I had aimed for 25L @1.040, but didn't allow enough liquor to get absorbed by the hop pellets in the boil, and my mash efficiency was slightly off due to the fly sparge.
Also finally got a new electrode for my pH meter, so it was nice to be able to check on my water calculations and with a mash pH of 5.3, I was happy. On the subject of water, I went for Graham Wheelers 'Bitter' profile which will hopefully give it a good hoppy punch.
I used up a few hop and malt ends in this brew, and hope that the Vienna malt will help balance a fairly hoppy low abv beer, but only time will tell..........
Still not sure whether to dry hop as well, so I will wait and see how it tastes once the vigorous fermentation is over. Most of this will go into my 20L Crusader keg and whatever is left will go into a few bottles.
Cheers

Re: AG#24 - East Anglian IPA
That is a cracking looking recipe.
One of my missions for 2017 is to get a session IPA dialled in. A 4% beer that drinks like a 6% one but doesn't have you staggering around and lawnmowing your toes off after 5 pints.
I brewed last week and tried a similar grain bill with a 70 degree mash to try and add some body. Hopped with Galaxy and Summer.
I'm planning to follow it up with a US version and had lined up a similar hop bill to yours - cant go wrong with Mosaic.
Let us know how it turns out.

Have a go at the Darkstar Hop head clone. It's not super hoppy but at less that 4% it goes down real easy.

Re: AG#24 - East Anglian IPA
I have rechecked the gravity again tonight, after it's first check at the weekend, and it is stable at 1.011 (4%), so very pleased with that.
The flavour at this stage is slightly malty and nicely hoppy, but I do want a bit more freshness, so plan to dry hop later with 15g each of Amarillo, Centennial and Mosaic.
It still has a fair bit of clearing to do, but the M44 yeast takes it's time, so it will get crash cooled before kegging.
Cheers

Re: AG#24 - East Anglian IPA
Sounds good! I've not used that much Vienna in a grain bill before. Will it add body as well as maltiness?
My first attempt at a session IPA with body has bombed....ended up at 1006 using WLP009 despite mashing high. I don't think it's infected, so retrying tomorrow with WLP002 and more carapils in the grain bill.

The Weyermann Vienna can be used up to 100% of the grist, so I assume that it is as fermentable as MO. I just like the flavour that it adds.donchiquon wrote:Sounds good! I've not used that much Vienna in a grain bill before. Will it add body as well as maltiness?

1.006 is pretty low, what was your OG? Do you think that you might have pitched too much yeast?
This may just be a shear coincidence, but I found that my FG's stopped dropping that low when i started to treat my water.
I racked my brew off of the yeast and dry hops yesterday, and plan to keg it and fill half a dozen bottles tonight.
Really looking forward to this one, planning to serve at 10C @ 10 psi.
Cheers

Re: AG#24 - East Anglian IPA
OG was spot on at 1044, but 1006 is 3 points lower than I have ever had a beer finish.Monkeybrew wrote:1.006 is pretty low, what was your OG? Do you think that you might have pitched too much yeast?
This may just be a shear coincidence, but I found that my FG's stopped dropping that low when i started to treat my water.
I pitched ~250bn cells, versus the 190bn recommeded as I've had WLP090 stall on me before. That's 30% over pitch....would that be the culprit?...I can't smell or taste any signs of anything wild...
Although I did a mashout, for about 10 mins at 76 deg, my sparge water was too warm after a slip up with my temp controller. I ended up doing half the sparge at 67 degrees. I wondered if the mash might have continued and made the wort more fermentable (although I had thought that the 76 deg mashout permanently knackered the enzymes).
I also used a combo of a little Galaxy and a lot of Summer. The Summer has turned out way to subtle for my liking....I was looking forward to an Aussie fruit-bomb, but it's very european in flavour.
I rebrewed it today with Mosaic, Amarillo, and Citra. Smells much better. Using WLP002 to try and attenuate less. We'll see how that works out...
Yours is a good colour. "10C @ 10 psi" - I never thought a sentance like that would make me thirsty!

Re: AG#24 - East Anglian IPA
I'm very pleased with this beer, and it has already slightly evolved.
It was very quaffable from day 3 to be honest, but the hop flavour was dominated by Centennial, but it now has a more rounded hop flavour and a slight malty note too.
The body is spot on in my opinion, and there is no hop astringency.
I really couldn't have wanted more from this beer, and it's just the job on a warm summer's evening
Cheers
