Grand Slam CAP - 17 March 2008

Post by Aleman » Mon Mar 17, 2008 9:47 am

Well Today will be one of the most disorganised brewdays at the Effin Brewery. I've not got the recipe printed or weight Water is on for mashing, but I've got to take the lad to school.

Pictures . . . . Well the Effin Brewcam is in operation. I'll look for a better placemnt of the cam a bit later on.

Back soon

Sorry guys,

The cam image is refreshed by A Java applet, so you will have to enable Java to see the image . . .Or you can always click on the open in new window. Certainly an image of my grotty shed and kettles is there . . . . Just sorting out the recipe

Well for those of you that could see the web can . . . I'll improve the image in a bit . . . will know that I have had a stuck mash . . . Enter the thermobox :D well mash temp is 54C so not good . . . Beer just want to be made . . . I'll have a look at what caused it I couldn't see too much as I emptied it, Just wondering if the mash was just too thick. . . . .

Time to have a quick drink and then return it to the lauter tun

I'm Killing the webcam

and If things don't improve soon I'm killing this brew

Even running off at an incredible slow rate cause it all to stick. I'm going to leave it in the Thermobox, and hopefully clean out the tun reset the false bottom, and try and run it all off again.

I'm Killing this brew, There is no way it is going to lauter.

I have just tried to remove the thick portion of the mash to see if I can get a filter bed set, and then run the liquid portion into the kettle . . . Even using a sieve, draining is appalling, and I've put 6 inches of mash into the lauter tun and run off is a trickle . . . around 3L in 15 minutes, I just haven't the time to persevere with this, so its going down the drain . . . I'll shove a pilsner on (With no Corn) when I next get brew time.

This mash is incredibly floury though Comes of being the end of a sack I guess. Reminds me of my first attempt at a larger . . . That stuck incredibly well as well, again because of massive amount so flour.

Back to simple things again, and see if the basic Single infusion mash will work, forget the RIMS, apart from the initial recirculation prior to running off.

BUGGER!!!!!!!

Nah, there really is no point, I had the funny feeling this brew was not to be, and I've been farting about all morning . . . Wort tastes bloody nice though. If I could just get 20L to drain, I'd be happy with that, but it just isn't happening

I do have to say that the one (and only) CAP I've done was distinctly slower to lauter than almost any other brew I've done in a long time. Recirc was not happening so I decided to go low tech and get the jug out to get the bits out and drain the tun by gravity

It least my tun drained I guess

Well, I've been going lo tech and have managed to get around 9L at 23 Brix which I make to be around 1.092 . . . . I suppose I could add 10L of water to it and fire up the boiler . . . . It would give me something at the end.

I've never seen anything this stubborn, even my Rye/wheat beer (40% of the grist) lautered in the same setup perfectly.

Well Just added the first lot of hops (20g Saaz B 8.5% AA) another 10g will go in in 15 minutes and then that will be it.

I've let the 'latuer' (If you can call it that :( ) dribble away while heating up and I now have 23.5L @1.051, I'll add the last lot of first runnings with the next lot of hops.

Whats probably going to annoy me more than anything is that it will probably taste damn fine

Well, The chiller has been on, and wort is down to below 70C, 20g of steeping hops added, and I'm taking a break to tidy the kitchen. . . . Most of the other bits have been put away as I've gone, So Although its been a damn long inefficient (26%!!! ) brewday I actually have something to show for it . . . And the wort is very clear. :D
