Old Grumpy at Easter

Post by Calum » Mon Mar 24, 2008 12:11 pm

I was supposed to be working this morning but to be honest my heart wasn't in it. So, you can imagine my surprise when SWMBO suggested "Its a bank holiday, why don't you take the day off and get a brew on.". My gawd she looked attractive at that moment but I managed to resist, jumped out of a bed and got the HLT filled up with water.

So, I'm back to a old favourite. Mash is complete so lets get on with the sparge. I'm taking some photos so I will get them posted later on.

Almost done for now and I have had a close shave. I almost ran out of gas but managed to get things done while there was just a trickle at the bottom of the bottle.

First batch. Mash had completed and half the sparge water added to the picnic box.

First runnings.

Spent grains and then straight into the compost heap. Don't worry the manifold has been removed (the worms hate copper)

Hops all weighed out.

Intermission for some other photos.

Here is the 50l bain marie that will soon become my mash tun.

I didn't expect this response when I asked some friends and family to save some bottles for me. So be careful what you ask for. Also, please note that the HLT and mash tun are already cleaned and stored to the left of the bottles. O:)

Current stock of bottled beer - to which Old Grumpy will be added. However, its not as bad as it looks, I have three cornies full of beer. 8)

One for the gardeners. We had the back left one last year but we have been digging out the other two over the winter - bloody hard work.

Back to business. Boiler pre and during boil.

Thanks, I did it to try and get an understanding of how the process fits together.

Looks like a smooth day. I had the same issue when I asked for bottles - I have more than I will ever dream of using. I suppose I should see if an y other local homebrewer could use a few bottles.

Anything I can get my hands on - however I find US-05 works well.

Looks great Calum.

Hows the Italian SS fermenter holding up to being a boiler with gas? I just can't make my mind up between a ali stockpot or using a stainless FV like you have done.

It is certainly solid enough although it was a bit pricey (I think I paid £175 for it which included the tap and hop strainer). On hindsight I would go down the Nordic Optical route on eBay and get one of their 70l or 100l ss stockpots (like many have done on here). Even after fitting a decent tap and manufacturing the hop strainer it would have come to less than half the brupaks boiler. I still have designs on getting one of the stockpots to use as an HLT but I think that will have to wait until further down the line.

Having said all that - the boiler does look the business. 8)
