This isn't just a boiler...

Post by anomalous_result » Tue May 20, 2008 9:05 am

...it's an M&S boiler. That's right for £5 a pop you can get an "Outstanding Value" kettle (with exposed element) from St Michael and contribute to their £1bn profit. As inspired by Vossy's picture stories (I'm still waiting for The Animated Series and associated movie release) I thought I'd share mine with you all too.

Using des' excellent instructions for dismantling said kettles (as found down the page in this thread) and after spending some time on the internets, I was left with these bits:

2 x elements
2 x leads with 13A fuses in the plugs
1 x 30ltr polypropylene bucket
1 x Electrim tap

As seems customary, here are some piccies:

Dismantling the kettle:

I then got anal about where I wanted the holes. The angle between the elements is 90 degrees:

Scribe and stanley knife (later followed by half moon file):

Next we turn to the elements. The connectors on the leads I've got aren't that deep so the prongs don't go all the way in. Not wanting to have live mains electricity open to the world a shroud is required so you trim all the plastic off to make it easier. des' solution is silicone sealant tubes. I also found that the second smallest section of a desk tidy is the right diameter, it's not deep enough though. I opted for a tub of wilko's sanitiser. Note also that I snipped the trailing leads and pushed them back in:

Wielding the stanley again you get this, not sure what all the white crud is:

Then I fitted a tap:

I'm going to be using hop bags and hoping that they'll keep most of the trub (yes?) out of the FV. I may get a hop strainer although they don't seem cheap for what they are. I've got a sieve if the bags burst.

Hope to do an extract brew tonight, the test boil went well.

Thanks to: des for the kettle dismantling tutorial and more, Garth for his advice, Vossy1 for wanting enough shiny for all of us and all the others who have gone before me and made mistakes so I don't have to. Cheers!

Could this work in the bottom of a mash tun or would the weight of the grain squish it ?

you could do as I am sure it could take the weight a full pint barely deforms the tube, my worries would be with channeling if you spiny sparged batch sparging I can see little problems. though I use a false bottom to attempt to syphon the wort out as this might leave a lot in the mash tun

Cheers guys, and thanks for the tip prolix, I did an extract brew last night and was so scared of the hop bags touching the element I strung them all up to my mash paddle. What a faff cleaning them out! Suddenly the standard HBS hop strainer looked a bargain. How do you fix yours on?

The boiler worked well otherwise. I was so interested watching the boil that thought "oo it's getting a bit steamy perhaps pull my head away now... hang on it's still steamy that's not right" I had a 2 foot thick cloud on my kitchen ceiling. Spent the rest of the boil wafting the steam out the window with a cardboard wine carrier. The mashing bag worked fairly well although let a few of small bits through as i tipped the grains in. Still got some cleaning up to do though.

The "white crud" on that bit of metal is part of the cutout mechanism. Basically the metal "bends" and pushes onto a cutout switch when things get very hot. Some people remove either the metal part of the switch it presses against if they have problems with the cutout.

Thought it was something along those lines as it looked similar to the part that I hacked off higher up.

Keeping the one with the white on in it didn't turn itself off anyway.

The "White crud" is heat transfer compound.
It helps to transfer the heat from one thing to another.

Its put on heatsinks attached to hot ICs
For example there is some between your PCs processor and its heatsink

Has anyone fitted these adapted elements to a SS boiler? I bought a couple of similar kettles from local co-op (fridgidaire models) for 7.99 each. Before I get the hammer out I want to check they will go into a stainless boiler without sealing issues. The main one I want to fit to is the 100l Nordic uninsulated.

For a hop strainer why not make a manifold like the one in your mash tun?

I don't have a mash tun, building one today!

I don't have any copper for it, although I'm sure that'd work.

I think I'm going to try prolix's memory tube stuff. I'll post an update if I get it in there.

After reading this thread, I visited my local Tescos and bought two of the cheapo kettles.

A bit different in design but seem just the ticket.

I'm finally on my way to All Grain!!!!
