Re: Fermenting bins, how long do they last and cleaning?

33L ones are available from Brew UK which I find just about right for my standard 27L brew lengths. Malt Miller also has 33L ones which look sturdier. They don't, however have scales up the side. I tend to replace mine about every thre years or so.

Re: Epson Salts - black pepper?

On the other hand there is (almost) no need to add Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) at all. Only about 5ppm is required in a brew and most water supplies along with what's in the grain, (or malt extract) more than meets that requirement.

Re: Hop Boiling.

I believe Stella Artois / ABInbev have a process where they bubble CO2 through the wort at sub boiling temperatures that achieves the same objectives. In their case it’s about being a good ecological citizen and using less energy/smaller carbon footprint. It would imply that wort agitation is the k...

Re: Fresh & Unfined (?)

I brewed a beer last weekend for Christmas . . . not exactly a typical style, but one that suits the drinkers; a 4.5% pale ale with 200g of hops in it (Citra and Chinook). Lovely. Anyway, my plan is to drop it into a corny on Sunday, 20psi, should be good for Christmas Eve. I'm not bothered about p...

Re: Stout Trouble

I've brewed 'standard' Guinness clones to that ratio a number of times and not had a problem hitting the numbers, so not sure what has gone wrong for you here. As Orlando said, poor Mash conditions are a possible cause. did you take pH readings?

Well they're not very expensive. I'd just pop along to your local aquarium supplier and get another kit.

Re: Pros and Cons?

I used to post a bit on here years ago, not much but I seem to have lost everything. Username password the whole shabang. Any way they let me back in again so thanks for that. I've been brewing for a number of years in one form or another, currently BIAB. I live in Greece now and can get my ingredi...

Re: Digital refractometer problems

Well I never have a problem with cooling as I take my measurement after the wort has gone through the CFC and is already at or about 20C. I never bother with pre-boil gravities. But you're right, if you take, for instance sparge gravities then the refractometer certainly comes into its own.

Re: Digital refractometer problems

I've got a cheap optical refractometer but have never got round to using it. I find a hydrometer perfectly adequate. In defense of the refractometer, it is a lot less wasteful of wort, but otherwise, how accurate do you want to be?

Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine

Initial thoughts: it needs a lot more work. 1. I don't seem to be able to change the defaults, even after pressing 'save all as defaults'. 2. In defaults editor what does 'boil volume scale' mean? 3. In defaults editor there is no provision for wort losses. 4. There is a yeast editor but no provisio...

Re: What are your thoughts on this? Ok?

Sounds encouraging; fingers crossed! Yes, floating stuff can appear unexpectedly (or refuse to sink) sometimes, even after fermentation. A bit of disturbance, release of airlock pressure, or the addition of hops etc etc can allow CO2 to rise, and it'll bring stuff with it on occasion. Can also depe...

Re: Looking for your Brown Ale recipe suggestions

I didn’t know Graham had a recipe and I’ve never used amber malt that I can remember. Crisp and Simpson’s have slightly different versions. It’s not even carried by MoreBeer. The only Amber I've used and only once was the the Crisp at 50 EBC. It's apparently a different animal from the Fawcett's wh...
