Re: Tapered bottles ....... Belhaven 80/-

Hello kev888 I never thought of the problem with the caps. I was very lucky that they fit and the crown capping gadget works OK with them. I bought a couple of trays of Manns brown in half pint bottles at the local cash and carry. They were going cheap. What has happened to the stuff? In the 70s and...

Re: Tapered bottles ....... Belhaven 80/-

Hello crafty john
No missus. But just like the famous W.C.Fields quotation "I fell in love with a beautiful blonde once. Drove me to drink. And I never had the decency to thank her."
Cheers

Re: Tapered bottles ....... Belhaven 80/-

Hello crafty john
Good idea getting the freebies from the local
I think I shall buy some full bottles though. I shall just have to drink the contents and suffer for the sake of my art.
Cheers John.

Tapered bottles ....... Belhaven 80/-

Hello folks. A few months ago I bought a few trays of Belhaven 80/- Good brew but I only bought the beer to collect a load of bottles. Makes more sense than buying empty bottles at the homebrew shop. Problem. Although the beer is good the bottles are tapered from the shoulders down, just slightly. W...

Re: Christmas brew for 2013. Ideas please.

Hello mcdonald_ajr Thanks for the swift response. My mind is made up and I shall go for the Twelfth Night at Toad Hall. The mash size wont be a problem because I only have 3 gallons worth of half pint bottles left, all my other crates are busy at the moment. and I dont have any more space left. I sh...

Re: Christmas brew for 2013. Ideas please.

Hello all. Ive had a look at the recipe from mcdonald_ajr , I think its looking favourite. Couple of questions to you seeing as you have already brewed it. 1/ Clementine peel. Did you use the zest or the whole thing with the pith, Or dried orange peel ? 2/ Did you do the double yeast thing mentioned...

Re: Stainless Versus Aluminium Stock pot.

Hello folks. I seem to remember a post where a chap put a stainless stock pot on the gas oven and put the flame up full belt. The intense heat was reflected downwards by the nice shiny stainless steel and damaged the top of his stove. Does this ring a bell with anyone? For the life of me I cant reme...

Christmas brew for 2013. Ideas please.

Hello all. I want to make an all grain special brew for Christmas 2013. This Christmas I made Robinsons Old Tom, bottled in August , 8.3ABV according to my sums, and very nice. Good for a one off pint bottle followed by a couple of bitters. Drinking is a thing you have to practice at to be any good ...

Stainless Versus Aluminium Stock pot.

Hello All. I split the boil between a plastic electric boiler in the green house and a stock pot on the gas cooker. That way I can get a good rolling boil with the hops and everything, without a boil over. PROBLEM. The pot was used for Hams at Christmas and no matter how I try , I cant get rid of al...

Hello to greenxpaddy and thanks for the contribution.

Where are you buying your grain from and how does the cost compare with the two places that I have mentioned?
Cheers.

Re: Maris Otter. Crisp versus Thomas Fawcett.

Hello to 6470zzy My usual supply involves a round trip of sixty miles and a 25kg sack of Thomas Fawcett, Maris Otter is £33.99p (English Pounds). So it is £33.99p plus petrol and time. The shop that I am going to order from is "The Malt Miller". I found him at this web site in an article about malt ...

Maris Otter. Crisp versus Thomas Fawcett.

One of our well known suppliers has 25 kg sacks of Maris Otter at £30 for Thomas Fawcett and £23 for Crisp. I have always used Thomas Fawcett and get consistent , good brews. Thinking of going for the Crisp at £7 cheaper a sack. Apart from the price, does anyone know if there is much of a difference...

Re: Graham's Calculator and Brown Ale.

I have had a look at The Big Book of Brewing by Dave Line. He groups water types as Soft, Medium Soft, Moderately Hard, Hard, and Very Hard. My Water supply is Soft to Medium Soft. What I have noticed in his book is that for Soft, Medium Soft and Moderatly Hard, Sweet Stout and Brown Ale have the sa...

Re: How many grammes of protofloc?

For convenience I bought an all grain Draught Bass Mashkit made by BEERWORKS a few months ago. It made five gallons of very pleasant beer. Included was one complete protofloc tablet with instructions to add it to the boil in the last ten minutes. As I always used Irish Moss before and had no experie...
