Re: Cheap grain
Well, I bought a 25kg bag of MO from Geterbrewed. At £37 with delivery I thought it was a great offer.

Re: Beer Engine Overhaul
Fortunately the cylinder on my handpump is easy to take apart. I always take the bottom of the cylinder off and store it that way to avoid mildew developing.

Re: Racking
I generally do something similar. I ferment in a conical until the OG doesn't change for 3 days, then I know its finished, I will then crash cool in the conical to 6C for two days. After that, and while still at 6C, I transfer to a bottling/kegging bucket and add finings if needed and/or conditionin...

Re: What do you use if in USA to reduce Bicarbonates - cannot get CRS
The other simple option that US brewers use is to simply cut their water with RO or distilled water. Why it should be the case I don't know, but both RO and distilled water are more readily available in the US being sold at many supermarkets, and is generally very cheap compared to prices here.

Re: Saflager W-34/70
I often use 34/70. I would use two packets myself. Lager generally needs more yeast as you are fermenting at colder temperatures. If you only have one packet you could always make a 1 litre starter. I did this recently when I made a Baltic Porter.

Re: Storing empty bottles
I too have noticed the “film” on the sides of the bottles, albeit not all bottles. Maybe there’s some which have a surface which is more susceptible to yeast adhering to the inside? And then there are the bottles returned by friends which not only have they not rinsed -despite being asked to! - but...

Re: Brewing lager from Wheeler/Protz European Beers at Home...
The Jever Pils in that book is worth trying as well (pg 133). The recipe uses pale malt rather than lager malt and I used a S05 yeast for mine. A German friend of mine was amazed how much like the real thing it was, including the intense bitterness, which is unusually quite high for a lager style. I...

Re: Temperature of beer when doing water treatment
Dave, Thanks for clairifying whay you used a campden tablet. Like Eric, I do not bother with sulphites but I can fully understand why Americans are a little paranoid as their municipal water reeks of chlorine, possibly chloramines as tmany utilities in the US use chloramines instead of chlorine. Yo...

Re: Brewing A Golden Oatmeal Stout
Brilliant posting Chas, puts any of my efforts, my equipment and resolve, to shame. If that beer turns out anyway like your writings, it will be a world beater. Nice to see you back on JBK, you've been away for too long. How long have you been using the BM in preference to your 3V? It's a while now...

Brewing A Golden Oatmeal Stout
INTRODUCTION When you think about an Oatmeal Stout, you normally expect this in your glass: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50878927977_22a51b70bd.jpg But for something completely different, what about an Oatmeal Stout that looks like this: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50878916142_103bd4...

Re: Hydrometer for people with bad eyesight
The large-scale hydrometer seemed like an excellent idea until I realised that the volume of beer wasted every time it was sampled was probably about 250 mls. in the Maltmiller sample tube sold with it. My most recent hydrometer problem is I think due to recent inclusion of a small amount of wheat ...

Re: Tilt hydrometer review
What are you doing with these Tilts and why are you making things so complicated? I have used them for years on all sorts of beers and in all sorts of fermenters (both stainless and plastic) and have never had the discrepancies and problems you have described.

Re: Some Brew Panel questions
I'm going to chip in there! I imagine "LeeH" has based his design on the "Electric Brewery" as is mine. The "Electric Brewery" design seemed to have the intention of supporting RIMS. ............................... In actual fact, The Electric Brewery site is a firm supporter of HERMS and doesn't r...

Re: Tilt hydrometer review
I have had eight of these Tilts, right from four of the original version 1s, which incidentally I gave away to other home brewers, when I got the latest version 3s. I only had to send one back - this was a version two and this was because a small component fell off when I changed a battery. There we...

Re: request for weissbier recipe
Can I just use standard table salt from the supermarket for the sodium chloride? I noticed it's got an anti-caking agent in the ingredients but presumably if it's ok for human consumption it can't be that bad for yeast? If not where in the UK can I get appropriate salt? Cheers That will be fine. Ju...
