Re: top working yeast.

sorry for the stupid question. . . But does this mean it will drop to the bottom when it is done? Also does it mean i can harvest some from the top before it drops out in the fv? Just scoop it from the top with a sterilised slotted spoon into a sterilised glass container. About 120g to 140g is the ...

Re: 60min or 90 min mash

All my wheat beers are 90min mash But other than that they are all ales at 60mins, eveything should have converted by then. Add to that a 60min boil, instead of a 90min and you are finished a hour earlier, just have to use a few more hops. This was discussed at a CBA meeting in Colchester, with two ...

Re: GW's Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby

Did this beer in 2006 to GW's earlier recipe when the planned FG was 1014. Used a live brewery yeast and bottled at 1018! Beer tasted fine with no bottle explosions. I do prime lightly though only a quarter teaspoon of sugar. Did another 25 litre brew in 2009 and remembering the high final gravity u...

Re: plumage archer malt

http://www.warminster-malt.co.uk/marisotter.html Here's the rest of the page to put it more into context. Also re-reading your post, I think it is a marketing ploy to make the drinkers of their beer think they are getting a "ye olde" type product. In a way they are as this variety has now been aroun...

Re: plumage archer malt

* Proctor was bred in 1952 by crossing Plumage Archer with the Danish variety Kenia. Plumage Archer was the first genetically true variety of English barley bred in 1905 by Dr E.S.Beaven, then proprietor of Warminster Maltings. The above quote is taken from the Warminster Maltings website. You will...

Re: Brown Malt in a Mild?

GW does include Brown Malt in the recipe for Fuller's London Porter in his BYOBRA 3rd edition. I know it may not be of any help to the OP, being in the US of A, but Brown Malt is available from Barleybottom for £1.59 a kilo. I have never used it, but have smelt and had a chew of some at a CBA meeti...

Re: Does anyone know what this is for?

Well I would,nt put my beer in a disgusting old barrel like that. Your beer must taste terrible if you think you can get a good pint out of that. The plastic will be tainted after all this time. My tip is to chuck it. I'd disagree, plus you haven't seen the inside, it may be quite clean. and even i...

Re: Amber malt in Pale Ale?

Just my 4p worth, but I would not go any higher with the amber malt. The Oakham Ales recipe for Hunky Dory in Marc Ollosson's book uses a 91% Pale Malt to 9% Amber malt ratio in the grain bill. I've done variations of this recipe several times using the original Challenger and Cascade hop combinatio...

Re: Hop and Grain supplies

Ordered and received very promptly some hops and yeast from BarleyBottom.

Very well packaged as usual.

BarleyBottom has got to be the place to get on-line brewing goodies. =D>

Re: Old Thumper recipe

I was under the impression that Ringwood used the same recipe for their Best, 49er and Old Thumper adjusted for strength. I'm not so sure as Best is comparable in colour and maltiness to OT whereas 49er is alot lighter. The grains used are identical and at first glance the ratios look identical, bu...

Re: Old Thumper recipe

I brewed OLD THUMPER from GW's latest book on 9/11/09. I'm pleased with the way it turned out, despite using S-04 instead of the live Ringwood yeast. I used the same grain bill as GW, but upped the hops to 35EBU in Beer Engine as I either like my beers to be hoppier or my hop utilisation is lower. T...

Re: Vienna malt ?

I suspect that describing Vienna Malt as German or American is just telling you where it has been malted. As long as it's kilned at 85-90 C and the colour is between 4 to 6 EBC it should do the job and give a malty flavour with caramel and toffee notes. The Vienna Malt that Barleybottom sells for £...

Re: Irish Moss AND Protafloc or just one into the copper?

Would there be any advantage (or otherwise) in chucking TWO protofloc tabs in? Just askin'... According to Mrs Hilary Kane (Quality Control Manager of Murphy & Son in 2007) the correct rate for Protafloc is 1-2 tablets per barrel. Each tablet weighs 2 grams and 163 litres per barrel. The variation ...

Re: can anyone recommend

Barleybottom takes first place for grain, hops, yeast and a limited but very fairly priced range of sundries. Quality of packaging and speed of delivery is excellent. For other items that are not stocked at Barleybottom, the second placed on-line home brew shop for me is The Home Brew Shop, which can ...

Stonie, why don't you read the exchange. I didn't come after him, he came after me with a big, "I know what I'm talking about and you don't" attitude. Anyone so feeble that they can't handle a little humor on the internet shouldn't be posting. I've said it before, I'll say it again! UK-05(Safale-05...
