Re: Xmas Gift for someone who HATES bottling?
Place bottles on the open door and fill them above the door. Any drips and spills are collected in the door. Less cleaning up!

Re: Berry identification
Those leaves do look like redcurrant leaves but not convinced by the berries. Redcurrants that I know grow on a single stem rather than several stems from a single point. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcurrant [EDIT] Look like Viburnum to me ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viburnum ). Do t...

Re: ACE IPA
Looks Ace Killer! Have you tried experimental 366 in a single hop brew. What are they like. got a bag in the freezer and not sure how to go? I've done a single hop brew with them. While it's nice I'd be careful about over-bittering with them. I did a 16 1.047SG litre brew with 15g first wort additi...

Re: Do I cool in my fermentation vessel?
I cooled it in the boiler by sitting it in a sink of water but this feels inherently risky. I do this and have never had any problems from it. I make sure I have lots of blocks of ice to feed into the sink to keep the water as cold as possible while gently stirring the wort. Works pretty quickly. A...

Re: Do I cool in my fermentation vessel?
Cool before transferring is probably best. This is what I do.
You don't want to risk getting oxygen into the hot wort. Should be below 28°C to prevent oxidisation I believe.

Re: Starsan
I'm sure Mr Starsan said it only needs a contact time of seconds. The time quoted is a minimum the have to quote by law. Pleased to hear that, I can only usually wait for about 30 seconds before getting bored. If it was recommended to leave for 30 mins I'd happily do that but 2 minutes seems such a...

Re: re-using rinsed yeast
If you've got sufficient yeast you should be alright. I usually have a pack of dried yeast ready as a backup.

Re: re-using rinsed yeast
When I use Mr Malty for yeast which has been in the fridge for a week or two I just slide the 'yeast concentration' slider right up to 'thick yeast' to work out how much I need. I then pour off most of the liquid from above the yeast and gently shake the rest back into suspension and add to a small ...

Re: High Alpha Hops
Then recently, I reread the book by the wonderfully monikered Randy Mosher, and he advises against using super high alpha hops at a home brew level. Reasoning being that you're using so few hops you don't get enough of the oils in there. Surely if you brew a recipe at home to 5 gallons and then bre...
