Re: Dealing with Hops

I expect the temperature would be below 80c when Mr Groan runs the wort off in to the fv so less of a problem.

Re: Are my homegrown hops worth brewing with?

I usually make a " hop tea" with some of mine. I draw off some boiling wort, cool -80c and add to 3 or 4 hop loaded large cafetiere's(acquired over the years). After steeping the resulting hop tea is added back post boil minus hop debris .

Re: Cacao Nibs

Yes that's how I did it last year in a 6%, full bodied Stout . In a jar, just enough Vodka to cover, steeped for about 48hrs. Then lobbed the whole lot in. The Vodka picks up the flavour.I didn't notice the extra alcohol from the Vodka. Gave nice background chocolate notes, nothing overwhelming thou...

Re: Great brew day - But!

Speidel state 6kg the max for the malt pipe which I have filled to a few times without any issues. 30litres of mash liquor to 4.89 of grain sounds like a fairly thin mash which may accentuate any wort fountain issue, which as mentioned is often caused by too finer grain crush or poor mixing.I usuall...

Re: Abbot Ale

As Moorland were taken over by Green King a number of years ago would this be the Green King primary yeast or a bottling yeast in the Hens Tooth?

Re: I'm after a grain mill

I have used the the MM two roller version for about 18 months(used once a month) and it produces a first time fairly consistent crush at .9mm.( with a slow drill speed). No issues so far, seems well made.

Re: Springer Filters

+1 to the above. I think it's an excellent bit of kit, although a lot of people struggle with it.The length of the siphon/ drop really is the key to an successful gravity drain with the springer filter. My siphon drop is about 850mmfor my 20litre BM. I usually use a mixture of leaf( early) hops and l...

Oh and I used beersmith to build my recipe. However I just changed my recipe to take out the lactose and the ABV dropped significantly. I thought beersmith would recognise its non fermentable?
I take it you ticked the " non- fermentable " box in " edit grain details" for the Lactose in Beersmith?

Re: Air lock bubbling

If the gravity has remained the same for 2-3days,and you are at or close to,target/ expected final gravity then the beer is ready to package. If the gravity has fallen some way short of the target/expected FG then it may be time to take remedial measures e.g. SLOWLY raising the temperature, gentle r...

Re: Overnight Mashing

Far from being an expert on this I did an overnight mash( Full volume BIAB) with a EPA a few weeks ago. Mash start was 72c, mash finish( 9 hrs later) 59c. Very high mash efficiency. Turned out a pretty good beer. Finished Slightly lower than usual for the yeast(SO4) and a little drier. No noticeable...
