Re: Grainfather - first impressions

I moved from 3V to GF about 5 years ago. I’ve never had any issues with it at all. But then most of the problems l’ve seen are caused by users not reading the instructions properly.

Re: GF - Starting boil as I sparge?

I’ve always done this- does it not say in the instructions to do this?

Bubble gum vodka

I’ve had a bottle of vodka in the cupboard for over a year, and have been trying to think what to do with it, other than soaking the spices for my gingerbread stout. I’ve had all sorts of ideas-cola bottles, pear drops, Kola Kubes, Glacier mints etc. I remember having Hubba Bubba soda many years ago...

Re: Worthington White Shield...

I’ve made this 3 times now. Used WLP 013 which is supposed to be Worthington yeast.
Lovely stuff, though White Shield is one my favourite bottled beers anyway.

Re: Apples for making cider

I’ve never bought a single apple or pear yet! Although lve no shame and always have a bucket in the car at this time of the year for any roadside bounty. I picked 2 and a half stone of pears from wasteland last week,Storm Ali kindly blew me another 8lb off a local tree that l can’t even reach the lo...

Re: Fruit Wine Q

There is a nice recipe for ‘English Port’ in CJJ Berry’s book. Bramble, blackcurrany, elder and slowe. I made it in 2016 with Young’s dessert wine yeast.
Bloody lovely!

Re: Old Beers & Brewing

There’s a local brewery recreated State bitter from the head brewers book, and a few from Whitwell&Marks in Kendal. My granny worked in various bars around Carlisle, there were two full bottles of State bitter and Brown in her cabinet for years. I went to have a look on my ‘Aunty’s annual Christmas’...

Re: Old Beers & Brewing

Hi. Have you managed to get any Carlisle State Management recipes? Anybody of my Dads age raves about the brown ale and l’d like to have a go whilst he’s still around.

Re: Saison

Use WYeast 3711. It’ll chew through lead. Finished 1.002 every time lve used it. I ferment everything with the lid loose for the first few days.

Re: Perry WLP 616

Well,l had my first bottle of this! It’s gorgeous. The yeast brings out the pear flavour, and there’s also a bit of sweetness left. I’d recommend this yeast for something a bit special.

Re: Bulk aged wine in carboy

I’ve been making wine for years,l’d never heard of a degasser until one popped up on my eBay ‘others also bought’ last year. I rack after initial fermentation into another demi john, top upto neck with water, leave it in the house for another month or so and leave it in the garage. I make apple and br...
