Re: Lalbrew Verdant IPA dry yeast
I brewed two beers with Verdant IPA yeast recently, an Irish Red Ale and a Stout. The Stout was pitched on the yeast cake of the Red Ale. Both beers were fermented without temperature control at 21C room temperature. The Irish Red Ale had an OG of 1.043 and finished 1.013FG, the Stout fermented fro...

Re: Lalbrew Verdant IPA dry yeast
I have seen some positive write-ups on another certain homebrew forum about using it to make Bitters etc. so interested to hear what people here think. It has a very wide expected attenuation range according to the Malt Miller website at least (72-82%). What did you get Paul? My attentuation was on...

Lalbrew Verdant IPA dry yeast
Hello all, I've been looking for a dry yeast that can produce characterful British styles, after using liquid yeast for years and wanting to take an occasional short cut. I brewed a best bitter a few weeks back using the Lalbrew "Verdant IPA" dry yeast, one sachet sprinkled straight on to 20 litres ...

Re: Should I get a Mill?
If you buy malt tidily for each brew, it doesn't hang around long and can get it crushed to your liking, there might not be much benefit to getting a mill. I bought one and use it for every brew. I like to buy base malt in bulk and have a fairly loose approach to planning my brew schedule. I often s...

Re: Aberdeen Area?
Hello! We now have two homebrew clubs in Aberdeen. Brewdog (Gallowgate bar) have one on the last Sunday of each month at 3pm. I've been going along to that for a few years now, a very friendly bunch. Fierce are starting a HB club too, third sunday every month I believe, first one is tomorrow at 2pm....

Re: The marmalade in Fullers
I get marmalade from Fullers ESB, love the stuff. I think it's from the yeast, as i've managed to get some of that character using whitelabs 002.

Re: Grains gone off?
1. I'd use this. As long as it tastes ok, go for it
2. I don't know why it's got black bits, but i'm weary. I'd chuck it myself

Re: Water profile for Bohemian Pilsner
Why would you want to throw so many chemicals at your wort, that you dont really understand what they do? IMO It's worth trying to suss out what these minerals do, as it has a big impact on the final product. If you can find a guide that speaks your language (this was the biggest obstacle for me, i...

Re: Vanishing hop aroma
Raspberries are a powerful flavour. I used 2 1/4 kilos in a 19l batch of stout last year and they overpowered it for several months. I wouldn't be surprised if the hop flavour and aroma are hidden by the raspberry rather than being absent

Re: Bottle conditioned yeast in suspension
Low temperature, as you suggest, might calm them down a bit. You could try to release a little pressure prior to pouring by cracking the cap off a tiny fraction, then letting it sit for a few minutes. I've had this happen to me a few times, i think due to infection at the bottling stage. Thankfully ...

Re: Dry hopping in a keg - sanitation question
The hops will be fine without boiling, they have some antibacterial qualities. As long as your hands are clean, just pack the hops in the sanitised capsule and get them into the keg would be my advice. I use a similar capsule myself and this approach has worked well for me so far. This works great w...

Aberdeen - Ferryhill homebrew / beer festival 29/9
If you're in the Aberdeen area please check this festival out on Saturday night. My local HB club are donating lots of beers to the festival bar. Your ticket price gets you in, then you can drink as much as you like. All proceeds go to Archway, a charity who work in Aberdeen supporting people with l...

Re: Wild/Sour Beer Tips
Your saison/brett blend shouldn't be particularly sour, so might tolerate some hop bitterness and character. Hope it turns out well

Re: Wild/Sour Beer Tips
I'd keep separate plastic gear (buckets, tubing, bottling stick, etc) for sour beer, especially beer that has been exposed to bacteria (lactobacillus, pediococcus, etc). Brett is a yeast and can be killed off by thorough cleaning and sanitising, but some folk don't take chances with that either. Gla...

Re: Acetaldehyde - Apple Off-Flavours
s-l1600.jpg Bought one of these - a Ferrari would you believe. Just bottled my 36th 5 gallon brew and never had a problem. You do have to adjust for different height bottles but no great effort required and the capper is magnetic. Not that weighty so should ideally be fixed down but I don't - just ...
