Re: Over carbonated pressure barrel

What does it taste of - can you describe it? Carbonisation and temp will affect the flavour. I'd say that it's very bitter at the moment. It's probably been conditioning for well over a month now so I had hoped that it would have mellowed a bit by now. It is also not as clear as brews that I've don...

Re: Over carbonated pressure barrel

Thanks IPA. I did as you suggested and have also managed to fit the pressure barrel in my fridge which seems to have helped the carbonation issue. The only problem now is that it doesn't taste too good. I'm not sure what the off flavour is, but I'm hoping that it might improve a bit if I leave it to...

Over carbonated pressure barrel

I have done my first brew in a few years and it tastes okay, but I must have gone a bit overboard with the sugar when I transferred it from the FV to pressure barrel as when I draw a pint, I end up with 3/4 pint of head! My question is, what is the best way to release some of the pressure from the b...

Re: Fermentation query

Took a gravity reading tonight and although I didn't take one last week, it looks like it's almost done. I also tasted the sample jar and it didn't taste too bad considering it's only been in the FV for six days. I think I'll chuck the dried hops in tomorrow evening and then transfer it to my pressu...

Where is it? In the garage?
It's in the downstairs cupboard, so not outside. I guess this should mean that the temperature should be a little more stable than it would be in a garage.

Re: Back in the game!

Yay! Adamz back in the game! =D> About time too. Are going to Dry Hop this kit or just do as is? WA Cheers WA, it feels good to be back! The kit comes with a sachet of hops (pellets I think) and you add them into the FV after seven days. My only slight concern was that the 5 litre bottles of water ...

What size batch? How much of a temperature drop was there, and for how long?
It was 23l and I'd say the ambient temperature has probably dropped by about 10oC. It's hasn't warmed up significantly since.

Re: Fermentation query

I put a brew on the other day and I'm just wondering whether the sudden drop in temperature may have stalled the fermentation. I very much doubt the temp drop was enough to stall it. Do you KNOW you have an issue or is this just a unsubstantiated thought? (we all get them). Test the SG. It's probab...

Re: Fermentation query

check the gravity. Then again after another couple of days. That should tell you the answer. Also you've not said how long it's been fermenting. Most ales will ferment out within a few days. Lagers will take longer (typically). This assumes a typical ale fermentation temperature of close to 20C Tha...

Fermentation query

I put a brew on the other day and I'm just wondering whether the sudden drop in temperature may have stalled the fermentation. I've attached a link to a photo below and you can see there's what appears to be particles of dried yeast floating on the top. I don't recall this happening when I've done b...

Re: Back in the game!

It is probably a little firm but otherwise fine if it is in the original packaging . Sugar is very stable and should last years if properly stored. I would open one and try it. It is unlikely to harm you. Sugar is used as a preservative - think of jams. Honey, which is a mixture of fructose and glu...

Back in the game!

I brewed up my first kit that I've done in quite a while last night. I had three packs of brewing sugar that had best before dates of 2015, so that gives an idea of how long it's been since I've last brewed beer! I've done a American Pale Ale kit from the Range, and made it with 500g medium spray ma...

I know what you mean, I seem to spend most evenings during lockdown surfing the web and this is the sort of thing that i might buy as an impulse purchase!
