Re: Sparge technique

I have a similar sparge technique in that a stop the sparge water 4 or 5 ltrs before I have achieved final volume in my boiler. This usually results in a further run off of about 4 lts. The last brew I pretty much drained the mash tun into the boiler and did not get the results you show in the first...

Re: Should I get a Mill?

I have a grain mill but only because it was on special offer at The Home Brew Shop (a prototype). I now buy both whole and crushed malt, my bulk malt I try and buy whole simply because I now have a mill and hope it will keep longer. Saying that i brewed a stout recently with a large percentage of ch...

Re: Micropubs in Thanet. Worth a visit?

They are definitely worth a visit. As you say there are loads to choose from with most being accessible by train, with a little bit of walking or taxi in some cases. We have been down there a few times as part of the cheap Sun Holiday deals and thoroughly enjoyed it. They are all worth visiting and ...

Re: Gas Free Ball Lock Line Cleaning Kit - PET Party Pump Combo

My pump arrived last week and got a chance to use it today cleaning out 2 corny kegs.
Normally I pressurise the kegs with CO2 to push the cleaning solution and water flush through the out dip tube. With this I can clean the dip tube without using any CO2.
Well pleased.

Really glad you got the beer engine to work. There is nothing better than a hand pulled beer.

Re: Now I have capacity, casking ales?

Can't help with sourcing a Pin (maybe a local brewery would be able to help) but I use a corny keg connected to a cask breather and the beer lasts for several weeks (I drink it before it goes off or flat). I do leave a few psi overpressure when not serving to maintain the lid seal, this is vented be...

Re: Hop advice please

Hop advice please

I haven’t tried these with El Dorado but I use Riwaka with Galaxy for a hoppy golden ale. They are expensive (available from MM) but are low AA so you can keep the IBU down. I use 100g Riwaka and Galaxy at 10 mins in my Riwaka Gold Ale for a volume into FV of 35 litres. The malt bill is mainly Maris...

Re: Half batch sour half ok

I'd be inclined to take all your taps apart (as much as they can). You may be surprised how much crud they accumulate even after a rinse through cleaning.

Re: Dry Hopping in the Keg

my thoughts

1. purge empty keg (I simply release CO2 via the PRV). Shut off gas.
2. release pressure and remove lid
3. drop in hops
4. put lid back on and purge (just to on the safe side)
5. fill keg (not sure of your process here)

Re: Whirlpool

I have to use a trub trapper in this boiler as is is a bit too narrow to get a proper cone. I get about 90 to 95% of the pellets' inside the trub trapper and the ones that end up on the outside are easy to deal with. With the whirlpool paddle once I stop the motor the paddle stops, losing the whirlp...

Whirlpool

So I got a bit bored and decided to take a look at whirlpooling. A few recipes I am looking at brewing call for whirlpool additions with up to 30mins whirlpooling. I do a limited whirlpool with a large spoon to create a hop cone (pellets) to aid run-off but I ain't standing there for 30 mins spinni...
