Re: Are my homegrown hops worth brewing with?
I've dried mine for a few years. I just spread them out on newspaper in the spare room and leave them for a few days. I never looked up what was best to do, but this turns out fine. The bugs tend to fall / fly off over that period too. I planted fuggles so already a low AA, and I think mine have a l...

If it's the first time you used them perhaps it's the seal.
Does the beer taste flat when you take a sample? If so add more sugar and make sure you know how the top bung works before resealing.

What does fermenting under pressure do? Allow you to ferment at a higher temp?

Re: first brew!
2 weeks in keg and keeps geting slowly beter. Totaly flat though which is ok for a stout, will adding a co2 bulb add any fizz to the stout [ no!] or will it just put presure in the keg for dispensing? [ Yes!] Guy Adding pressure to the barrel will reduce the rate at which existing fizz is lost thou...

Re: Nottingham Yeast query
Or think about something like this , together with something like this . I'd certainly recommend going down this route. Using a no rinse sanitiser prior to bottling reduces risk and these products make it much quicker than soaking. I've not tested the no airlock thing significantly but I've not bee...

Re: Nottingham Yeast query
Ah thanks, the present batch I'm drinking - Black Sheep/Nottingham and IPA/West Coast, about 20% of the bottles are fizzers, with a lot of head. I didn't realize that yeast played a part and had assumed that the culprit was the Torrified Wheat, which I use to promote head. How sure are you that fer...

Re: Nottingham Yeast query
It's probably easier to ferment somewhere convenient and choose a yeast which works well at that temp.

Re: first brew!
Bought a 5gl bottem tap king keg and dark belgian candy sugar for this brew but am unsure how much to add to the 18l of stout. Any help welcome :?: I would probably prime with 2-3g of sugar per litre. That's about the same sort of fizz you get in cask ale. You can go higher if you want it fizzy lik...

Re: Head "cracks" on hand pulled beer
I always thought this was a recipe / yeast thing. I worked in Kent for a year in about 2000 and I remember Master Brew (and I think Spitfire?) doing this when bought from the local pubs. Now it was a long time ago, at the start of my drinking career, and I didn't get to go to the pubs very often, so...

Re: Commercial examples of an Amber West Coast IPA
The only american red IPA I can think of is Thornbridge Colorado Red, but I just checked and that is only 5.9% I'm not actually wanting it to be hugely strong, 5.9 is easily strong enough for me! I got some Mr President from Tesco yesterday and will see if I can get some of the others online somewh...

Ron @ Barclay Perkins does a service where he will help you design a beer from x years ago.bitter_dave wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 9:47 pmWhy don’t you make a beer recipe from 100+ years ago? Perhaps a crazy strong mild ale!

Re: Commercial examples of an Amber West Coast IPA
Brewdog Hardcore? Never had it but it looks dark. IPAs are all that’s available here in the US so I’m sick of them  Just googled that, thanks. I've never had it before but I'll check it out, although I imagine the 9.2% will make it fairly prohibitive! Edit: it seems to have been renamed Mr Pr...

Re: Commercial examples of an Amber West Coast IPA
Three easily obtainable ones that spring to mind are Sierra Nevada Torpedo Magic Rock Cannonball Brewdog Jackhammer I mean much more amber than that. Like 15-20% crystal or something. If I am remembering this rightly I had this beer a fair few years ago when I was in California which is like what I...

Commercial examples of an Amber West Coast IPA
Anyone know of any commercially available West Coast style amber IPAs? I'm looking for something really hoppy, very bitter with lots of crystal in. Piney kinda hops.
I tend to buy the really hoppy beers I like because they do a better job of it than I do.
