Re: Hose pipe ban

Used the United Utilities online form and got a reply within a few hours, although there's a typo in their reply and I'm now exempt from the ban and can use my 'cooling cool'.[emoji23]

Re: Marris Otter alternative

Yes it's better than most, but not the best. And it's price is definitely being kept high through intention, although through being limited as to how much and where it's grown. Given Maris Otter’s past, you can’t blame Appel for keeping a close eye on its future. He says that you’ll never find it gr...

Re: Marris Otter alternative

Would it be fair to guess that using MO malts has more to do with tradition and perhaps even snob value than flavour? Not really, or at least not only; it is still one of the best varieties you can easily get for home brewing. It does have its own flavour, whether you can tell in certain recipes ma...

Re: Hose pipe ban

It's not a complete ban, it's restrictions e.g. https://www.unitedutilities.com/globalassets/documents/tubfinalweb1.pdf There are eleven restrictions and cooling isn't on the list. Warm water can be collected and put in your water but. There is a statutory exemption for health and safety. I reckon ...

Re: Weird Beersmith 3 water behaviour

@hairyjamie You can set up your own water profiles in BS2 and 3, including the necessary additions of salts to achieve that profile. These will be based on your own calculations, all you need to do then is to add the desired quantity of the relevant water profile to the recipe and it will automatica...

Re: Weird Beersmith 3 water behaviour

It’s worth asking Brad on the BS from. He’s quite active on the BS3 section at the moment. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro Second this. I emailed him about adding CRS as an Ingredient that influenced the Water/Mash section of BS3, as so many British brewers used it. I received a reply saying h...

Re: Graham Wheeler - Yeast

You'll be pleased to know the revised book has just gone to print and is available to order on the CAMRA website. The book is co-authored by Graham Wheeler and Andy Parker, one time winner of the national homebrew competition and owner and brewer at Elusive Brewery, Finchampstead (and all-round nic...

Re: Graham Wheeler - Yeast

So, it's was always going to be down to GW himself whether or not his work saw the light of day. Sadly, fate intervened.

Re: Graham Wheeler - Yeast

Yes, sad. One would guess GW's new work was never submitted, as it would be a simple task for an editor to merge the old and new work, then publish as a new book. The alternative is a reworking of the old book, which would have been a posthumous project. I'm not sure anyone is claiming it is 'his' r...

Re: Graham Wheeler - Yeast

Yes, so the old book was used as the base, but it seems to have been rather independently revised. I can't see any suggestion that GW's (quite extensive) new work went into it, or even that he had much input to the revision at all; what a sad loss. As a posthumous project there's going to be limita...

Re: Graham Wheeler - Yeast

It will be very interesting to see how much of this is actually based on the significant revisions Graham was writing. I wasn't aware that he had handed over very much before passing away, and see that he is not the first author; I wonder if it is largely other people's revision of his previously p...

Re: Graham Wheeler - Yeast

When Graham wrote his book the home brew supply industry was still in its infancy, so a wide range of yeast strains wouldn't have been available to his readers. I would guess you were just meant to use whatever yeast you could get your hands on. He was doing a rewrite of the book, but it wasn't fin...

All depends on what I'm brewing and batch size, I either use the Wilcos FVs pictured or ferment in corny kegs.Image

Re: Anyone used "bouncer in-line beer filter"?

I think I have found a cheap alternative for these Bouncer filters. Sold to the caravan market for use on water pumps, under the Shurflo brand, for £7-15 with various fitting options. EBay, Amazon and a host of independent retailers stock them. Main body is polypropylene and a clear nylon cage. The ...

Cheers Edd. I'll be doing a pale Bitter and an ESB, same grist but different gravities and tweaks to the hopping.
