Re: NCB & Wishbone Brewery Homebrew Comp 29th April

Really enjoyed it last time and it's gone on the calender :) Now mulling over ideas for a brew...

Re: Riwaka

How much were you ordering, besides the Riwaka? I bought 4x100g Riwaka, 2x100g each of Wai-iti & Waimea and paid a total of NZ$91.51 back in April - $26 of that was shipping. The exchange rate was more favourable then, as it came to under £46 all in. Made the price of the hops £5.65/100g which I tho...

Re: advice needed

It sounds like you're asking about two areas of brewing: - How to brew (BIAB kit & process) and - *what* to brew (malts, hops, yeast, water, and ???) You can get plenty of advice here on the first, but for the second you'll need to say what styles you want to try before getting much in the way of re...

Re: Wishbone Brewery Homebrew Competition

Likewise! Very enjoyable day and good to meet so many other homebrewers. First competition for me so didn't expect anything, but when collecting the comment sheets found I'd come 4th :)

Re: Which are the easier/harder beers to brew?

My quick and easy AG of choice is a Guinness clone. 1 kg flaked, 500g roasted, pale malt to whatever abv you want, and about 30g of any bittering hop at start of boil. You don't even have to worry too much about it clearing. (with being a dark beer) Best of all, it's often more expensive at the pub...

Re: Pellet or Leaf - which do you use and why

Wonkydonkey wrote:I use both, it can depend on the supply of the type I want at the time of ordering, then I just use them in the brew accordingly. But I do prefer leaf for the boil and pellets for dry hopping.
Just the same for me.

Re: Cascade

That's a shame :( I've had very good results with M44 - The beer in this post viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2241&start=7800#p791378 was done with it.

Re: Norfolk Nog Question.

I did the Nog kit a couple of times, both finishing at 1.014. I've read here and elsewhere the Wherry kit had a tendency to stick, often around the 1.020 mark, and the kit yeast got the blame. I had good temp control (water bath & aquarium heater) and fortunately never had a stuck ferment - though t...

Re: *New* Mangrove Jacks Craft Series Cider Giveaway

Hi Mark

I have a preference for the pear or apple, though any would be fine. I've had good results from the MJ yeasts so the kits should be good.

Re: Old freezer dilema

If it's chilling but not freezing reliably then either the thermostat is faulty or the refridgerant is starting to leak. If it's the first then you could replace the stat using an stc1000, fit a heater too and bingo you've got a multipurpose fermentation \chiller\ temp controlled cabinet. That's a ...

Old freezer dilema

We've got a 24 year old freezer that's on the way out, not managing to keep stuff cold enough**. A replacement is on way, but I'm torn between uses of the old one. I can either use it just as malt & hop storage - at 220 litres it will hold a lot in vermin proof conditions (this is in my garage), or ...

Not me, but I'd be interested if someone has! I had some on a brewery tour there a few years back, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Re: Fermentation temperature control

BrewFridge2.jpg And here's the brew fridge in action, with a bottled Amarillo blonde in secondary fermentation and a five hop IPA in the fermenter. You might just be able to make out the InkBird controller on the side. I'll fix the cables in place with tape or ducting once I'm happy with the placem...

Re: Fermentation temperature control

They are quite a snug fit, and joined to create a rigid shelf. The bottom ones do have extra support as the heater is now mounted on a frame. It's the bottom shelf that I'm expecting to use (less lifting involved) but it's handy to know I could double up production if needed** It'll be getting a 'dr...

Re: Fermentation temperature control

I've had a couple of heating solutions that have worked well. The first was a waterbath (garden trug) and aquarium heater. Fine for garage use but maybe a bit messy for indoors. The next (and current) was a Fermentemp - temperature controlled warming plate (won in an online comp - too pricey to just...
