Re: Old hops
Many years ago, I came across a pack of gold vacuum packed hops in a drawer. I thought I would use them in a brew. I did and added the WHOLE brick instead of 30g After fermenting and waiting, I ttasted the brew. WOW IT WAS BITTER!! I left it for 6 months and it was drinkable. So do a small taste and...

Re: False bottom for Grainfather
I went the other way and used a bazooka screen instead of the T filter.
Worked fine for the couple of years I used it, not brewed for a while now.

Re: What One-Pot Systems do y'all use
I have a GF30, sadly I haven't brewed for over a year. I went from 3V to the GF and didn't regret it, I brew(ed) 20L lengths to fit my corrnies. I found that a 20L brew in the GF = 19 in the cornie. I tend to leave the bottom plate in place since it is a PITA to fit, lost the top plate several years...

Re: Cheap brew pot
How/what are you brewing, are you using a kit or grain in a bag ?
You also don't need to sanitize the water only the kit i.e. the bucket and anything that contacts the brew mix (wort)
more info needed

Re: is this going to work???
A "sucrose" (or similar spelling) sweetener doesn't leave the saccharine taste. Splenda is one, Aldi/Tesco/etc all make one just check out the ingredients.
Being a diabetic I use it for making cakes etc and I hate the taste of saccharine.

Re: any electrical wizzes? temperature controller query
You need a L supply to each of the relay's. I used to use a jumper wire from the L 240V in to the first "hole" on each. Then the other one goes to your o/p's. I.e. On back of unit. You have <L N> <R1a R1b> <R2a R2b> <sensor> (The connectors on the back screw terminals, a&b are just arbitrary assignm...

Re: Brew kits in the 80s
Must admit in the 80's I was a lover of the Boots Strong Ale series (can't remember the name now). That was my go to drink for many years.(Served from a Boots Aluminium keg) Couldn't stand the cheaper tins, tasted like cheap cider. Then in the 90's I moved to BIAB then to 3V and now a Grainfather.

Re: cool box mash tuns
I used one for many many years and it used to keep to with in 2 deg over 90min. That was without any extra padding. I did however add a towel to the top to keep the heat in.

Re: CRISP CLEAR CHOICE ALE MALT
I've brewed several sacks of it (from Worcester Hop shop) and had no issues.
It tastes fine and I have been doing a lot of SMASH's over the past winter. (high og 70+ but still SMASH's)

Re: Hambledon Bard refill S30 discontinued
On of the reasons I moved to cornies and a 7kg cylinder several years ago. (my "local" (80 mile round trip) stopped selling refilled sodastreams, so had to get HB ones and since I had traded all my old ones in... )
Costs more in the short term but worth it long term.

Re: Grainfather - first impressions
I've always used a pet food scoop (3 or 4 cup US size) to add grain, it adds about 0.5Kg at a time. I've been cold water sparging for several years now still hit the figures, just do the mash out before you sparge. The bottom seal is a PITA, do the above and also super glue it in place, or dump it t...

Re: Grainfather counterflow cleaning
I've been using it for cleaning for at least 6 years if not more. 3 with the GF, and on my 3V system with a solar pump before that. Never had any issues with it.
