Re: Hop Growing 2016

My fuggles has got some rusty veins on the leaves which I'm hoping is just a nutrient deficiency- I'm wondering whether MiracleGrow will provide or whether I need to use some Epsom Salts (apparantly hops can get significant magnesium deficiency).... I'd use some good feed that contains nutrients as...

Re: Laterals

My Challenger has 2ft laterals, the Golding about a foot and Fuggles 3-6 inch. It's their 1st year so can't comment on what's normal. BTW, they're about 3 feet from the top of their lines (17-18 feet). Didn't expect this in the 1st year and growing in 45litre pots. Do you just let them keep going on...

Re: Poppy seeds

Congrats on the new addition to the family. Haven't brewed with them but poppy seeds are freely used in bread making - with no issues. Also, a major UK drug company grows poppies to harvest the morphine from the seed head sap - the seeds are a 'waste product' which it sells to the bread making indus...

Re: Abbott Ale

Abbott was supposed to have been a great beer a few decades ago, I'd have loved to have tried that one It was the best beer I have ever drank, it was a standard regional brewery in those days before they tried for world domination. I agree, lovely beer. Used to drink it at the Railway, Billericay, ...

Re: Silly questions requiring making starters

Using a vial thingy and doing the following, I'm making a 1.050 ipa in the next week or so. I'm considering taking a litre of this before its under gone the boil and then freezing it. Then in June before the brew day thawing this out boiling it for 15 minutes then do yeast whispers method of shakin...

Contradicted advice from a professional hop grower but another search produced this.

So I'm now in the "let 'em all grow" camp. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Pruning hops to 2 bines

I'm just going to allow 2 or 3 to grow. Given it's the 1st year not expecting many hop 'flowers' and don't want to have plant expend too much energy producing foliage - better to get root system established.

Re: Hop Growing 2016

I potted up a couple of rhizomes last november. No sign of growth yet. With the recent warm weather I was hoping to see some activity by now. Fingers crossed for a little while yet... Me too. Goldings started early Feb (now about 6 inches), Fuggles and Challenger kicked off a few weeks ago. I'm nea...

Re: Pruning hops to 2 bines

Don't forget that you can also try propagating the cuttings. Not guaranteed to work, but worth a go. As jackthehat said propogate. I put some in some pre boiled water and waited for the roots to develop then plant in small pots in a weak or previously used compost. good luck Thanks Guys, I like the...

Pruning hops to 2 bines

I planted out some rhizomes last November and the Goldings has 5+ shoots.
How do you remove the ones you don't want? Pinch out the tops (as in tomatoes)? Pull off from the stems? Cut off from stems? Another way?

Re: Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter Clone Recipe

I have repeated this recipe 5 or 6 times tweaking it slightly to try and improve the end result. I would recommend standard bitter profile and I totally agree with Orlando re.... gelatine. Stir it properly in hot water, leave for 5 minutes then stir it properly again. The water takes on a slightly ...

Re: Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter Clone Recipe

Managed to acquire and purify yeast(s) - there were bacterial contaminants - from the brewery a while ago so gave this another go. Recipe as Seymour's but with a few v. minor tweaks plus tweaked the IBU up to 42 and boiled the Progress for 90 mins and the Bramling X for 45. Water profile was for "bi...

Re: Yeast starter queries

Not having a pressure cooker, the idea of sterilising the flask in the oven at 140C for while appeals greatly. Er, you might want to check this first. :D You also need to check this too. In labs we used dry heat at 160C for 2+ hrs (depending on load). I do my glassware at 180C in fan oven for 45-60...

Re: Unboiled wort for starters

I always have about 1500ml 'waste' (trub/break) at end of a boil. I put this in a 1500ml container in fridge for day or 2 then decant off about 750ml wort. This is frozen ready for my next starter, then after diluting and/or adding DME to make up required volume and adding some nutrient. I boil for ...

Re: Reviving Old Brews

Was on a Harvey's tour last week. When in the mash room the guide pointed to the tun in the middle and said they got it from "Page's of Croydon" and when he started there 1 of his jobs was to go into it after each mash and sweep the spent grains through waste holes - now done with added SS powered a...
