My fuggles has got some rusty veins on the leaves which I'm hoping is just a nutrient deficiency- I'm wondering whether MiracleGrow will provide or whether I need to use some Epsom Salts (apparantly hops can get significant magnesium deficiency).... My Challenger has 2ft laterals, the Golding about a foot and Fuggles 3-6 inch. It's their 1st year so can't comment on what's normal. BTW, they're about 3 feet from the top of their lines (17-18 feet). Didn't expect this in the 1st year and growing in 45litre pots. Do you just let them keep going on...

Congrats on the new addition to the family. Haven't brewed with them but poppy seeds are freely used in bread making - with no issues. Contradicted advice from a professional hop grower but another search produced this.
So I'm now in the "let 'em all grow" camp. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm just going to allow 2 or 3 to grow. Given it's the 1st year not expecting many hop 'flowers' and don't want to have plant expend too much energy producing foliage - better to get root system established.

Don't forget that you can also try propagating the cuttings. Not guaranteed to work, but worth a go. As jackthehat said propogate. Pruning hops to 2 bines
I planted out some rhizomes last November and the Goldings has 5+ shoots.
How do you remove the ones you don't want? Pinch out the tops (as in tomatoes)? Pull off from the stems? Cut off from stems? Another way?

Not having a pressure cooker, the idea of sterilising the flask in the oven at 140C for while appeals greatly. Er, you might want to check this first. :D You also need to check this too. In labs we used dry heat at 160C for 2+ hrs (depending on load). I do my glassware at 180C in fan oven for 45-60...
