These all sound fantastic, think I've just got my next inspiration for this weekends brew day!

Re: Scorched Element - Have you ever gotten away with it?
Try whacking some plum flavouring, or vanilla flavouring in after fermentation has finished, to see if you can disguise the taste, turn it into a plum Porter!

GF pressure transfer JG reducer size?
Hi Can anyone tell me what size John Guest reducer I need for the gas hose that is supplied with the GF pressure transfer kit? I am currently using 3/8 beer line from the CO2 regulator for carbing my beer, and ideally want to run a splitter with a stop tap on one spur which has 3/8 out and then the ...

Re: Lager fermentation, when to rack?
Yeah, I carbonate mine at low temps, and it has always been fine for me.
I have to hide my long term projects behind stuff in the garage, otherwise I'd never be able to wait. It helps that I've normally got 3 or 4 on the go at any one time, otherwise I'd have to raid the hidden cornies!

Re: Lager fermentation, when to rack?
Your process sounds good to me. Very similar to what I've done in the past and had good results. As others have suggested, I may have gone a little higher on the temp for the diacetyl rest, but I'm not sure it will make a lot of difference in the long run. It would be interesting to hear your taste ...

Re: Gas Regulator Board Service
Have you tried the Buffalo Leak Detector? It helped me to find a leak on the JG fitting.

Re: Pale ale with oatmeal?
Plain porridge oats have always worked fine for me, used multiple times in Seymour Citra recipe. You could try adding Torrified Wheat, as that adds mouth feel also.

Re: Carbonation Pressure/Temperature Chart
This might be a daft question, but how long do you need to keep the CO2 pressure on at the set temperature to get the level of carbonation you want?

Re: 7 year out of date yeast
I'll be tasting at all stages going forward. If I'd picked up the taste in the HLT water before mashing, I would have started again, but saying that, the contamination could have been cleaning product not rinsed properly from the FV, which I wouldn't have picked up until mid fermentation taste test,...

Re: 7 year out of date yeast
Unfortunately this experiment turned out bad :( There was a very distinctive off taste of antiseptic / cleaning product. My general theory is that I had cleaned the HLT on the cold side with washing up liquid and not fully rinsed, there did appear to be some very slight foaming action when heating p...

Re: Out of date yeast!!?
I revived some 8 year old Nottingham a couple of weeks back. It took off like a rocket after being brought back to life in a good starter solution.

Re: 7 year out of date yeast
So far so good. I'll take a hydrometer reading tonight which should give a good indication on how things are progressing. Everything smells good and the krausen is still there when I took a little peek this morning into the fridge. Looked like the krausen had risen to the top of the FV, which tells ...
