Re: starting all grain brewing
Not sure if linking to another forum is permitted on here, but here goes - a great thread that got many of us started with AG https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/have-a-go-at-simple-ag.51779/ I did my 1st one using kitchen pans, several of them to do the mash which I stepped up to 10L (if you...

Re: British hops
Mangrove Jacks MJ36 Liberty Bell is my go-to dry yeast for British ales, really brings out the hops compared to S04.

Re: What Is Extract Brewing?
I also do full wort boils. In my opinion dry malt extract can be virtually indistinguishable from all grain. I have not had good luck with liquid extract. Good point about liquid extract: likewise, and there's been a lengthy discussion on another forum about this, liquid can vary greatly in quality...

Re: What Is Extract Brewing?
Extract brewing and all grain brewing are very different. Sorry, but I disagree: the main difference between the two is that AG has a mash stage. I brewed Extract for a long time before moving to AG, initially I was very disappointed with AG until I honed my technique. The big advantage with AG is ...

Re: Betty Stoggs - Clone
Resurrecting this ooooold thread as I fancy having a go at Betty Stoggs. A mate of mine had a bottle last night and photographed the label, which is incredibly helpful: malted barley and wheat, hops Northdown, Celeia and Aurora, and it even gave the IBU: 37. Not heard of Aurora before but they seem ...

Re: Our first Extract Brew
I may get lambasted for this, but I think AG brewing only gives you a tiny step up in terms of quality on Extract brewing. I stuck with Extract for years and when I eventually went AG I was a little disappointed. Of course with AG you can brew a much wider range of beers with all the different grain...

Re: Our first Extract Brew
Did you use DME or LME? On another brewing forum some of us have come to the conclusion that the liquid stuff causes the homebrew twang, hence why it occurs in tinned kits. Some of us tried some unbranded LME in Extract brews and we all got the twang. Good luck with the brew, it should be miles bett...

Re: Rehydrating dried yeast
Did you mean 30c? The recommendation is usually 30-35c. Also 10 ml per gram. When I started homebrewing I was told never to re-hydrate the yeast in water more the 5C different to the wort temp as it would shock it, so interesting so see this advice from a manufacturer. I always re-hydrate 20-25C, w...

Re: Brew kits in the 80s
The start of my homebrewing "career" was in 1981 with a Boots Lager kit at my mates house, fermented in his mum's airing cupboard - wasn't bad bearing in mind we were 15 at the time :-) I remember having these little plastic bottle caps that popped off if you got too much pressure in the bottles - s...

Re: lager
Today I brewed a Helles lager with 3% Melanoidin malt, first time I've added this so will be interesting to see how it turns out. Fermenting it with MJ M76 Bavarian Lager Yeast, again a first. I only make lagers once every 2 years or so, so am far from an expert on this style.

Re: Wilco's Mexican Lager kit
I've done a lot of LME and DME brewing over the years, hundreds of brews, and I've never seen a brew change colour to brown: slight darkening yes, but not a complete change. I've also made that Wilko kit with light DME and it came out as expected, very light. This doesn't explain your problem but I ...

Re: Mangrove Jack’s Liberty Bell.
Strange one that. I've never had anything like that in 170 brews, in fact I recently posted on another forum asking how people got those huge Krausen and the replies suggested very high OGs. I've done beers up to 1070 and still not got one like that. Clutching at straws but could there have been twi...

Re: 2nd Brew - Blue Moon Style Extract Brew Questions
I brewed a partial-mash Wit yesterday, the one from the Greg Hughes book. I used dried yeast MJ21 Belgian Wit as I've used before. I don't think it matters too much on the type of Hallertau as with Wit's all the hops go in at the start of the boil for bitterness. I'd just go with what you can get. I...

Re: Phenolic taste at the end of a keg.
I've got exactly the same problem in my 3 kegs: the beer is fine after initial carbonation, then starts to develop a TCP taste 4-5 weeks in. Have you tried leaving some beer in the keg to see if it gets worse? Mine just gets more and more phelonic the longer I leave it, real harsh TCP taste and arom...
