Re: A community project to grow hops in and around York (UK)
And, finally after months of procrastinating, their permanent home has been turned from a pile of demolition rubble to a 10 1/2 foot high hop frame... It's a touch agricultural, and my wife's a bit concerned about what neighbours may be about to say (I'm more confident in the soothing effects of be...

Re: Hop Growing 2016
Well, it looks like the Flyer x OP that I've got at the front of the house is a male. :-( https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8618/28612407052_b66307bbbc_b.jpg TBH, I was hoping for more of a dwarf plant anyway, so it's not a great loss if it's male I'll get rid of it at the end of the season and replace ...

Re: Hop Growing 2016
The soil was kept moist all the time so it wasn't lack of water. When you say moist, how moist do you mean? Roots need to be able to get some oxygen, so drying out a bit is good for them, and hops like soil with good drainage, so that they're not waterlogged. Just a thought, Tim Sent from my MI 2S ...

Re: A community project to grow hops in and around York (UK)
Hi Tim afraid I'm not on Facebook, but would happily join in on this, and would take a couple of plants if you are offering more than 1 per head. I met the guy building the new ainsty ales brewery the other week- he'd definitely be up for this if there were enough of us producing a decent amount of...

A community project to grow hops in and around York (UK)
Hello everyone, If you or someone you know would like a cheap Prima Donna plant to grow for a community hop project (or for homebrew) then please visit https://www.facebook.com/YorkCommunityHops/ and get in touch, or via JBK if you prefer to avoid FB. I'm hoping to have a green hopped beer brewed by...

Re: Hop Growing 2016
Sounds great, I would love to see that. Did you know it was revealed Flyer is a dwarf hop?! I'm still trying to determine if any of my seedlings inherited the dwarf growth habit. It sounds like yours probably is not dwarf (depending on the height of your house, I guess). Here's a couple of pics, th...

Pedantic? Which way do they grow in the southern hemisphere?scuppeteer wrote:If you want to be pedantic about it that's fine, but hop growing terminology is: Hops grow by following the direction of travel of the Sun. So East to West, Left to Right and Clockwise!

Re: Hop Growing 2016
It's how mine looks... the flowers tend to grow on the side-shoots of the main stems... Definitely DO NOT remove side arms, that's where the flowers occur. I think we're actually in agreement here: on my plants, the growth at the bottom *is* from extra leader bines, but it's a useful clarification ...

Re: Hop Growing 2016
My dwarf Prima Donna has reached the top of the fence (6ft). I’m now trying to train it across the top of it. The base has gone a bit wild with side-arms. I’m guessing this is normal? It's how mine looks. There are various opinions about cutting them off or not. The impression I get is to leave the...

Home brewing is a great hobby for working out how (im)patient you are, isn't it?
I bet most of us have had a thought process along the lines of 'It's been in the bottle for a few days and it's started to clear... Hmm, I said I'd wait a week, but maybe it's time for a sample'.

Re: Coopers Euro Lager (Perle)
If it's been in the fridge since bottling, I'd be inclined to take a few bottles out and leave them somewhere a bit warmer for a week or so then chill before trying. At least you can get an idea of the potential carbonation that way so you can see if it's worth waiting longer for the other bottles t...
