Re: Grainfather grain mill

I would be really interested to hear if people have noticed a dramatic improvement moving from the top quality freshly milled grain, sealed in thick gauge plastic bags by Rob and his team at MM, when they moved to a malt mill. A couple of the more unusual malts I thought I might use or I’ve got my s...

Thanks Kingfisher. I do like a sour beer now and then, so will take a look at the videos.
Pleasure. I’m just about to harvest my Blackcurrants so will probably try substituting them for the raspberries as an experiment.

Re: Redcurrants in Beer

Hi, If you hate sour beers please ignore. If you like them or would like to try then look up David Heath’s sour part 3 on YouTube, it’s an easy raspberry sour with Philly Sour yeast which doesn’t contaminate fermenters or need kettle souring etc. I brewed a batch last summer and love it as an occasi...

Re: Another 'stuck' brew

yeast is yeast Nah. Absolutely cannot agree with you there. Although I only have 70 All grain batches under my belt, I’ve used several different dried yeast varieties, from Safale, CML and Mangrove Jacks. I bottle rather than keg and have noticed dramatic differences in performance and characterist...

Re: Lessons Learned

The responses above are much more experienced and learned than my own. Sadly, I have failed to find a homebrew club anywhere near in Derby, would love to learn rapidly as suggested above with others more experienced. As background, I have only been brewing for three years, also on a Grainfather so, ...

Re: Bottle conditioning question

Cobnut’s reply is spot-on. You presumably haven’t used a plastic bottle to gauge the pressure for this batch, but good idea for future. If it’s single hop Citra you may well have dryhopped. If I were you, I would open one now and try it. The learning from tasting progression / fading of hop aroma it...

Barkeepers friend is excellent for cleaning residue of stainless steel vessels. I have found the cream version best. Needs a good shake.

Re: Kit that tastes like...

Hi Jstinchy, Welcome to the hobby and Forum. I have only been brewing for three years and plunged straight in with all grain. I aspired to brew beer is similar to the draft cask bitters I enjoy in the pubs. I managed a few tasty bitters, but they didn’t emulate the pub beers particularly closely. I ...

I always use a mix of pellets and leaf, as long as there is over 40% leaf content my copper pipe filter in my boiler works fine.
Thanks, useful to have that ballpark figure to work from.

Re: Dealing with Hops

I have a Grainfather and have settled for using leaf hops as the couple of occasions I used pellets gave trub issues. The leaf hops, when settled form a great filter bed for each other and the hot break proteins. I have considered using some pellets with the leaf hops to reduce my wort loss for tran...

Re: Nottingham Yeast query

I have found that Liberty Bell seems to very slowly chew through more complex sugars after primary fermentation producing over carbed bottles after a couple of months or so. Clearly, this won’t be an issue if you don’t bottle, or drink your batch relatively quickly! Liberty Bell has a nice flavour a...

Re: Grainfather pump issues

I remember a thread on here, which frightened me away from using readily available, unscented supermarket percarbonate to clean the Grainfather. Something to do with rate of oxygen release/bubble formation which can impair the pump I think. I have stuck to PBW at 55°C, similar time brewing with the ...

Re: Priming with brewing sugar

It is also really critical to ensure the sugar is dissolved and mixed evenly. Otherwise you risk exploding bottles! Less dangerous with plastic, but still very messy. Although more hassle than bulk priming, I dissolve the calculated quantity of sugar in a jug with suitable volume of boiling water, a...

If you haven't already come across it "Brewing Classic Styles" might be a useful book; award winning recipes (American) all with extract +/- steeped grain versions. Covers most general beer styles.
