Re: PH Level of Star San

Time to don the tin hat and peer above trench. Boy oh boy McM has got a head of steam today and is going for it big time. Getting very personal. I never made any claims with respect to the scientific publication that I refrered to. It was merely one of many papers on the subject and made some rather...

Re: PH Level of Star San

I will add few comments to the discussion. Firstly, it is a legal requirement that any tap used for drinking (potable) water should be connectd directly to the supply. That is the law/ building code but it is anyone guess if it is always adhered to. Ethanol as a preserver. This is more complex. Etha...

Re: PH Level of Star San

It's tin hat time again. I am going to agree with much of Masbag's methodology. My processes are remarkably similar insomuch I wash out the equipement with water and a nylon scrub and then trat with an alkaline surfactant cleaner. I would also agree with Mashbag on potable water. The water delivered...

Re: PH Level of Star San

McM, I note that you do not allow PM's. As for my experience I do not wish to bore others. I am a chemist and I went to a university that actually taught chemistry which is a rareity these days. I have worked for 43 years in oil production, refining, petrochemicals AND most important water treatment...

Re: A better spunding valve?

My experience with the Kegland chinese blow tie valve was nothing to write home about. The real issue is the differntial pressure. The diaphragm is small and when it finally opens it stays open, and the back pressure is all over the place. The fermentation process is not constant in terms of gas pro...

Re: PH Level of Star San

Yes 12.5 ml per litre, but I ust confess I am do not exactly measure it out to the exact ml. I put about 2.5 water ltr in my fermenters after a good rinse and scrub followed by about an egg cup full of Trio and leave to soak for about 30 mins after sloshing it about. I dump the contents don the toil...

Re: Drill for MM3 pro

I would be inclined not to use a drill at all - they are not designed for such operation. A 1/3 hp electric motor and pulley is likely to be a better option, but it means deciding on the RPM needed ( I would reckon 180 rpm)and then working out the pulley sizing for the motor and mill. I know it is a...

Re: PH Level of Star San

As expected the flak has started in earnest. Well iIagree with some aspects of the criticism and strongly disagree with others. No-one is quoting form an MSDS. Here is the source for the trio 100 MSDS and it is work a peek. http://www.cloverchem.co.uk/2013/sds/en/201_trio100_sds.pdf In a nutshell Tr...

Re: PH Level of Star San

i will probably get head shot off but I will stick my head above the parapet on this one. There are many products placed on the market that claim to be the be all and end all. Most are nothing special, just products assembled from off the shlef components and sold as something special. Take Vanish, ...

Re: PH Level of Star San

Here we go again. I would not bother trying to measure the pH of a Starsan solution for the simple reason is that you have a surfactant called DDBSA, that will not help any pH probe, especially a cheapo pH probe that you will find on low cost pH meters. Eric is 100% correct in that hard water will pr...

Re: New Large O Ring required? or just re-fitting?

Absolutely fine to remove wash and re-fit. i do it all the time and would not re-use without cleaning as beer can get slopped up under the seal. These are readily avilable off eBay. There are several types. Silicone is not worth the extra cost. Clena with warm soapy water and a nylon scrubby if nece...

Re: TILT troubles!

Might be worth mentioning that you might be pushed to get any reading in a ss fermenter. As it uses wifi then then a ss fermenter will be an excellent Faraday cage. So no much used for me. Thank goodness for hydrometers- the old fashioned type. A further note. I bought a pycnometer with a thermomete...
