Re: Beer engine + polypins

I have used a beer engine and polypins a lot. However I drink a bit more than 8 pints a week. SO I don't have any longevity problems. :) My beer engine has a non return valve and I always ensure I get good seals and don't air to back fill the polypin. The beer engine draws hard enough to pull the be...

Re: Ordered a Brewie! Have any good recepies?

I see that The Malt Miller had a massive price drop on the Brewie.

It's now out of stock, I wonder if he sold any or has just given up?

I quite liked the look of it and would of probably of took a punt on it at the reduced price over my Grainfather, might of been a lucky escape!

Re: The Bulldog Master Brewer All in One System

I had problems with stuck mashes on my Grainfather. Kingfisher on here, recommended adding an extra 2 litres of water in the mash and reducing the sparge volume by 2 litres. (On a 23 litre batch). It definitely helped. However, the biggest issue seemed to be over-crushed grain from the supplier, whe...

Re: My first Corny keg attempt - nothing but foam

I had a similar problem the other week, I think it was caused by over priming for secondary, something I don't normally do. What I did was vent off with the PRV until it stopped or too much foam started to come out, (do it outside!), then leave for a few hours and then repeat. It took multiple vents...

There was a bit of "gunk" on the surface, not a white film though.

Lambic infection - when do they show?

Well I brewed a Saaz lager 3 weeks back.

I kegged it today and a bit of a funny smell to it. Slighly "lambic".

I taste it and it didn't have a sour taste to it. Would it be noticeable immediately?

I've kegged it anyway and I am wondering if it's going to go sour while conditioning?

Over-carbonation problem in corny

I don't normally bother with secondary fermentation but when I kegged a 7% IPA I primed with sugar. It had been in the keg for a week or so and I connected it up to my CO2 and tried a bit. The beer was nowhere near ready, needed at least 2 more weeks. So I gave it a fairly high pressure blast of CO2...

Re: Chances of surviving sanitation blunder?

I think the whole obsession with sanatising everything is something driven by the suppliers to sell more chemicals. I do clean and sanatise my kit but I don't think that beer is quite as sensitive as people think. It was brewed for hundreds of years before people knew what germs were. If it was an a...

Re: Minch Malt 20 GBP a bag.

I had a lot of problems with crushed malt from them.

Kept getting a stuck mash in my Grainfather. Never an issue with Malt Miller or Worcester Hop Shop malt.

Although if your milling yourself, you should be able to avoid that.

Protofloc - How much?

How much protofloc do people use? According to The Malt Miller you only need 1/4 tablet per 23l batch. However, if I bought recipe packs from the Worcester Hop Shop or The Home Brew Co, then they have included 1 whole tablet for use in the brew. That's quite big difference. Is there a difference in ...

Re: safeale-s04

I would say that's done.

The "quarter points" rule is a good guide for expected final gravity. OG - 1050, FG is a quarter of 50, so about 1012. 1010 is very good attenuation of around 79%. Should be about 5.2% ABV.

Re: Hazy wort from pellets in Grainfather

I would guess the alpha acids are responsible, high aa% are very sticky, low aa% are flaky.
That could be it, the Saaz pellets were very low AA, only 2.4%. I've never brewed with such low AA pellets before, I have always used leaf hops when doing lagers.

STC 1000 - Replacement sensor

The temperature sensor on one of my STC 1000's is broken.

The only replacement's I can find online are about £5, which seems ludicrous as a new controller can be got for £12.

As these are only cheap thermistor's, does anyone know the spec so I can get one from RS or similar?
