Re: All Time Favourite AG Recipe?
My most regular brew is a Bavarian wheat beer (hefeweizen) named “Hazelweiss” after my wife of 31 years. It has ben through a few different variants, but essentially: 60% wheat malt (I generally use Crisps) 40% lager/pilsner malt (although I’ve used English pale when short of lager malt, and the dif...

Re: Coffee stout
Hmm not sure I’d go quite as bitter with a coffee stout.
I made one a few years ago, albeit OG 1040, but only 22IBUS. Turned out good.

Re: Kozel Dark
The coca cola of beers is how I describe this beer, just too nice to drink. My local club went down the rabbit hole trying to clone this beer a few years back. will look up the 2 recpes I did later. Do recall getting Franconian Drak Lager yeast to use for this once, WLP4030. Thanks John Luc. A frie...

Re: Replacement Boiler Tap
When I began BIAB, I used a (cheap) tea urn/boiler I bought off eBay. I replaced the tap with a 1/2" BSP tap (had to enlarge the hole) and a bazooka filter I bought from the Malt Miller. Still working 7+ years later, although I use GF30 for mash/boil and the tea urn now serves as sparge water heater...

Re: Beer Engine gone wonky
My guess is it's an old bit of software which doesn't know about Windoze 11 (and so doesn't like it!). I know in older versions of Windoze it was possible to run program(me)s in some form of "compatibility mode"...maye there's a Win98 compatibility mode in Windoze 11... Try right clicking on the ico...

Re: How Much Roasted Barley?
Yes, agreed. It’s all about balance. The roast barley will contribute some bitter notes and then adding 60IBU of hop bitterness on top would - in my view - unbalance the beer. If you lifted the ABV to 8%, 60 IBUs would be more appropriate. As DrJim says, around 40 IBU would seem more the mark. But a...

Bitterness seems a little high in that recipe.

Re: Grain Gorilla
Resurrecting this thread. I bought one of these from member of my local HB club (he was upgrading to the Grainfather mill). It has been mostly fine in the year or so I've had it (might be longer, but I can't remember exactly). Occasionally, the 2nd roller (which I think is not driven like the first ...

Re: ispindle Problem
No experience of the iSpindel, but I have been using a Tilt hydrometer for about 5 years now with no issues. I have replaced the battery at least once; it's a bit of a pig of a job to do, but the seal works well. One the subject of seals. Most types of rubber do not fare well with substances like va...

Re: Smoking
Sounds rather similar to the beer I have cold crashing in my fermenter using the smoked malt you kindly sent me over a year ago, except I used Saaz hops and a lager yeast. Very much looking forward to tasting this beer in a month or two.
Cheers!

Re: English Trappist Beer
I can't get either of those to work (the FT one is behind a paywall I think) but I searched the BBC website and found this - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-48854460 This article is from 2019, so not sure whether they’re still having issues. A member of our local HB club brough...

Re: Kozel Dark
Resurrecting this thread following a recent trip to Prague where I had several “pints” of Kozel Dark. It’s a lovely beer which put me in mind of a Dark mild, but with a lager like crispness. Just wondering whether any of the folk who contributed to this thread are still about on JBK, and also whethe...
