Re: Adding Water After Fermentation!

Thanks for the amazing responses folks! There is a good calculator on Brewers Friend for dilution. Ok so trying to work the Brewers Friend calculator out, Ive calculated that I need a gravity of 1.020 to get an Abv of 5.5%. Using the calculator based on a 15l batch, I have worked out that I need to ...

Adding Water After Fermentation!

Hi all, Need a bit of help! So, I have brewed 2 batches of IPA based on the same recipe - the first batch is now bottled (OG: 1.062, FG: 1.011, so ABV 6.7%), which was a bit stronger than desired but all good. On the second batch, I added more sparge water to get a weaker ABV (target 5.5%) but somet...

Thanks guys - much appreciated!

@ Meatymc: Thank you - really helpful and I will indeed see plenty of need to 'rearrange the garage' :)

Re: Dry hop - temp reduction

Newbie here! Just in the subject of cold crashing, I am looking to do this with my first brew this week, a West Coast IPA. Background is that I dry-hopped after a week, a day before the hydrometer read the same for 2 days running. The recipe says to dry-hop for 5 days. So, I have a few questions and...

Fermenting In A Catering Urn (water boiler)

Hi folks, following on from this thread (https://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=67522), I'm looking at temperature-controlled fermenter options as I brew (and ferment) in my garage that can get a little chilly this time of year. I have been thinking about using a thermostat-controll...

Re: Equipment Advice

Thanks for the advice folks - much appreciated! Researching around, it seems that a hydrometer and a refractometer would be useful. @LeeH - thanks for the links. That refractometer seems to point to the seawater version though. Is that correct? Also, what equipment do you guys use for PH testing? Th...

Re: Grainfather Conical Fermentor - newbie questions

Cheers again @bryanferry - super helpful!

What are you using to cold crash? Is the pump aggressive enough to do that? If so, would love to hear about the process? :)

Re: Grainfather Conical Fermentor - newbie questions

@gr_baker: I was thinking that should it have to be moved during fermentation (unlikely, but you never know with house renovations!), how much damage would be done to the brew by moving it whilst in the GF conical. One good thing about lifting/moving the GF is that with a house renovation comes some...

Re: Grainfather Conical Fermentor - newbie questions

Thanks for the quick replies folks! Good thinking about the use of a plastic fermentor in the first instance @gr_baker - that would solve the carrying issue. Also, thanks for the info @bryanferry - interested to hear more about your cool box and cooling pump setup. Are you just using it for cold cra...

Grainfather Conical Fermentor - newbie questions

Hi folks, First post here, and enjoying this amazing resource. Am a newbie brewer (other than the usual kit brewing at Uni back in the day...) and have decided to go with an all-grain setup. In terms of fermentation, I'm looking at the Grandfather Conical as I understand the importance of temperatur...
