Re: Benzalkonium Chloride

The virus is a fatty sheath with protein inside it. Just about anything will damage the fat around the virus and make it ineffective, soap will do it. There's no research on how food safe Benzalkonium Chloride is so I wouldn't but it's used in some medicinal preparations so 0.1% should be OK if you ...

Re: Water treatment at it simplest

Hi, as a new brewer (but old chemist) living in an area with hard water, would it be reasonable to start my brewing adventures by using the water directly from the tap for dark beers, and boiled water for light beers? My theory is that boiling should remove dissolved carbon dioxide (and chlorine) w...

Re: Replacing S30 valve

It seems available technology has moved on since starting this thread and I've found a solution I'm more or less happy with. I bought a new lid for the King Keg, can't get them without holes so I've had to use the centre hole rather than drill two holes. It looks lop-sided. The valve in the centre i...

Re: Pressure leaking from my King Keg valves.

According to the Hambleton Bard site the new stainless steel version can be used for either 8g bulbs or the larger 240g cylinders. Guy With the SS ones there's a reversible pin. Use the pin to pierce bulbs, reverse it for the cylinders. I have endless problems with my S30 valve. I think there must ...

Marbles work fine, you just need enough of them.

Re: Replacing S30 valve

There is a thread on here sometime ago, on a similar subject. I can’t find it from my phone currently, but will try later, if you haven’t found it. The recommendation was essentially to replace the standard king keg lid and S30valve with a product made by Balliihoo. It is the four-inch With replace...

Re: Replacing S30 valve

Replace it with a Corny keg has in post, job done :) Aamcle I knew someone would I think that there is a typo error here it should read "GAS in post" The problem will almost certainly be in one of two places. The small seal ( the one like an old style bicycle valve) or the four inch seal on the lid...

Re: Replacing S30 valve

Through the valve. It works ok as long as the seals are newish and in the right place and I've screwed the valve into place at the right tightness, tight enough to stop gas escaping and not so tight the rubber washer distorts. There are too many variables and it's too annoying.

Re: Replacing S30 valve

It hardly ever works properly. I'm forever messing with seals and re-priming beer.

Replacing S30 valve

The S30 valve on my King Keg drives me mad. It's just too much effort to keep it working reliably so I'm looking around for a way to be rid of it but still use the King Keg, not interested in moving to Cornies. Does anyone know of a way of doing this? I can't be the only person to have thought about...

Re: Adding Water After Fermentation!

Boiling water expels the oxygen held in it. It will absorb more but should help.

Re: Cleaning and Domestic Drainage

I have a septic tank. I don't put any cleaning fluid into any drains that go to the tank. I use sodium percarbonate for cleaning and keep it for 24 hours before disposal so I'm only putting sodium carbonate into the environment. I heave spent grains over the fence for sheep to eat (shhh - don't tell...

If you're worried it's reasonably easy to put in a cardboard box or wrap with brown paper.
