Re: wyeast 1187 ringwood
Charlie, You are absolutely right. I dont have the patience for real ale priming in kegs. Aaargh. But this reflects on me being impatient, not the yeast. Now, I am drinking a pint. It is clean, good, tasty, but cloudy as hell (not clear). Its fruity and nice. Oh, i put a part of the cake under a mic...

Re: wyeast 1187 ringwood
Sooooooooooooo Fermentation worked ok. 14 Feb it had a good fg of less than 1.01. Left to have clear itself and late 16th cold crashed it. 18/02 evening, looked clear enough so dropped into corney with a few tbs of sugar to prime. Now tasting 21/2, and just not impressed. Tastes more like a Boddingt...

Re: Barm vs Krausen
Is that where barmaid / barman comes from then? must have lost the extra m?
barmpot might as well be the overflowed heads in the troughs under the taps - all poured into a barmpot

Barm vs Krausen
Hi, We all seem to use Krausen for the stuff on the top of the fermenter. eg high Krausen. Why? Its always struck me as a horrible strange word. And its meaning is variously given as 'to add newly fermenting wort...' or 'fermenting wort' (merriam webster).. And from German..'to add herbs to brewing ...

Re: wyeast 1187 ringwood
Turned temp up yesterday to 24 degs but control doesnt seem to respond - still at 20. Today sg is at 1.012 and small bubbles / krausen on top. i used shed loads of silicon anti foam during oxygenation, dont know if that does anything. Rousing each day - big lumps. Bought a bottle of 49er yesterday f...

Re: wyeast 1187 ringwood
Well, day 2- good krausen finally (normally i achieve good krausen on day 1), day 3 good krausen. Day 4 (today), Krausen a bit thin; roused; very lumpy. sg around 1.020 maybe 1.025 a bit higher than expected, maybe i am being impatient. what am i expecting? 3-5 day main ferment, 3-5 day to fully att...

Re: wyeast 1187 ringwood
Hi, It was no more than three months old and kept in fridge as specified. splashed and simple air stone aeration for 40 minutes, so not brimming with o2 but better than normal. Thanks HTH for saying you really like it, but my question all the way through is WHY???? its a pig to start, it stalls and ...

wyeast 1187 ringwood
So, brewing an AG 49er with wyeast smackpack 1187. saw some posts saying it was a bit of a pain on start up, but many people rave about it. Got it out of fridge 2 hours before pitching since didnt realise the probs. kept it down my trousers for 30 mins to body temp. smacked. 1.5hrs at 22 degrees. pi...

Re: No Boil, Fresh Hops - 50% Hops!!!
Thanks, Kev Comments i agree with. So yes, i had signs of infection and campdened it two weeks ago. Left it another 10 days, kegged it. Done gone out clear and tastes good. Clean but green and a fresh hoppy taste. You cant achieve this taste any other way. not very biter so add isomerisaion and the ...

Re: Stuck mash
I am jealous of all your expensive set ups. i use plumbing braid and a mesh tube. i like to have a decent space for the liquid to collect in so i have a simple aquarium plastic filter cut to shape and support it with aquarium filter balls (about 1.5 inch diam). this protects the strainer pipes from ...

Re: No Boil, Fresh Hops - 50% Hops!!!
Hi IPA. Time and botheration. if i can avoid the boil and cool i knock masses off my brewtime. Using the old yeast cake has also dramatically sped up fermentation - its almost finished. I'll leave the little yeasties probably a week or so to clear up after themselves. It looks like its all about tim...

No Boil, Fresh Hops - 50% Hops!!!
Thought i would use try a no boil, but with fresh hops. I have a new measure for hops, since the normal weight doesnt work = 50%!! As in = I aim to make 20Litres of beer, so i will use 10 litres of fresh hops by volume. = 50% this is due to the very small utilisation in the mash tun. Obviously this ...
