Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

The answer is 'yes'. Temperature changes DO affect the ispindel itself. 1/ The accelerometer output is affected by temperature. It's this that is used to measure the tilt angle, by measuring acceleration due to gravity. 2/ The plastic container does expand slightly when warmed, creating the illusion...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

Does any one know if the temperature of the liquid affects the tilt/density results, in any way OTHER than the temperature affecting the perceived density directly? I was wondering if the ispindel itself is affected by temperature, somehow? Might the container the ispindel is in get larger, due to w...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

I've run through the calibration again and got much better looking results. I've read on another site (from someone that appeared to know what they were talking about) that the calibration curve should be shaped like a tan curve. A steep angle in the high densities, flattening in the middle, then st...

Re: Sudden problems predicting mash pH

Brewed again yesterday. Predicted ph 5.5 - measured 5.52.

I hope this 'winning' streak continues...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

Making some progress … I replaced the accelerometer sensor board, and I am now getting tilt angle readings from just under 90 degrees (when the tube is laid flat) to just short of 0 degrees when the tube is vertically upright. So I think now there’s a good prospect of getting a series of sensible ca...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

I'm thinking maybe you're right there: it can report changes in density, but not the absolute density. But that's not how the Tilt sells itself! Mine does not appear to accurately indicate the density below 1030(-ish), as it starts to be affected by the 17 degree sensor error. So it's not going to b...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

I've noticed that standing on its lid, IE upright, it reports an angle of 18 degrees. That seems a bit out. I checked the float angle in tap water, measured using a protractor, it's about 15 degrees, 20 at most. However, it's reporting 32 degrees. Could this be why my graph of data points turns up a...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

I did the calibration procedure again, using sugar solutions made using my own calculations and not the instructions on the ispindel website. This came out with points that were much closer to the best fit line produced, but the line isn't shaped like anything I've seen for other people's data. It's...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

So, is the calibration graph supposed to look like the example at https://github.com/universam1/iSpindel/blob/master/docs/Calibration_en.md? My data points are scattered all over. There isn't a one that is anywhere near the formula line it is proposing. I followed the instructions, kept the solution...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

Right, several issues: 1/ It seems you have to reserve an IP address for the Ispindel on the main hub. Perhaps there isn't time for a dynamic DHCP request to to get from the extender to the hub and back again, in the brief time the Ispindel is on line. When dynamic, the IP reservation just didn't lo...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

The problem with that is that at the moment, I'm testing it, and I'm indoors, so the main hub is also accessible to the iSpindel. It will just connect to that because the SSID will match that. It works fine connecting to the hub in the house. But that will be no good when its out in the shed, in the...

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

But I've bought the extender now! No, it's a different SSID, with _EXT suffixed on. My phone and laptop can connect to it OK, but the Ispindel won't.

Re: ISpindel Digital Hydromenter

Has anyone any tips for getting an Ispindel to use a wifi extender? My brew fridge is out in the shed, too far away for the weak wifi from the Ispindel to get back to my hub. So I bought a wifi extender, to sit on top of the fridge. The Ispindel will do what it is supposed to when connected to my hu...

Re: Sudden problems predicting mash pH

Congratulations! But I hate mysteries like these! I want to know what's going off. My 'raw' water is very soft and has low mineral levels so I had added Calcium Sulphate and Calcium Chloride. Calcium was predicted at 157ppm. I don't think I've ever brewed with less than 100ppm Calcium.. I have a RIM...

Re: Sudden problems predicting mash pH

Well, I would have preferred it a bit lower, for a such a pale brew.

It's not a major worry. I just wanted to know if anyone had any explanation why the water calculators went from predicting the pH really well, to being so far out.
