Re: Ashbeck mineral water
there is plenty of stuff that will affect your mash pH (the water being possibly the least influential)...it is unlikely that any brewing software will accurately forecast the exact desired outcome. You have seen a consistent difference between your predicted mash pH and measured mash pH....just wor...

Brew yourself a stout...imperial even....and throw the Belgian yeast at it. Ferment at 19-20 to keep the esters in check....you might just create something wonderful.

Re: New British Hops -your experinces
Was going to say that I brewed a Rice Lager using Godiva for a club challenge but looks like someone has beaten me to it!! :D It was a really simple beer (75% Pilsner, 25% Flaked Rice), mashed low (64) for dryness and fermentability and all of the hops were added in the stages during the final 15 mi...

Re: carboys vs bottle conditioning
Fair enough...you are the head brewer as the saying goes :D I can see how aging in say Bourbon casks, like Innis and Gunn do, might help develop character...but given that you are aging in a glass (? or similar) carboy I wouldn't have thought it would deliver any character...so not sure of what 6 mo...

Re: carboys vs bottle conditioning
What is the purpose of the 6 months in the carboy? what is it that you are expecting to get from such a long secondary maturation period? Whatever you get from it will surely be partially negated by the secondary fermentation that occurs when you prime the beer for bottling? For such a dark beer I'd...

Re: Spotless Water
No one should brew with 100% RO water in my opinion. Although we may add back in Calcium, Magnesium, Chlorides, Sulphates etc etc there are other elements that are beneficial to yeast such as zinc, that we brewers do not routinely add back in. Cutting with tap water (council pop as my grandparents u...

Re: Temporary hose and tap ...
I use a garden hose on a reel....have done for 8 years now. Yes I run it for 30 seconds before drawing off any water that might go in a brew but other than that don't take any specific measures other than lobbing a campden tablet in it. Our garden hoses are in very regular use so it is rare that wat...

Re: Award winning recipes: Nick's Märzen (Scottish Nationals 2022 Best Of Show) - 2022-03
Quick question 75 min mash, Magnum hops added @ 60 mins, is that 15 min boil then add the hops or boil for 60 mins then add hops ?. I missed this when originally posted but foob4r's explanation was correct. Baiscally I don't add any bittering hops until the boil has been underway for 15 minutes.......

A Danish brewery a few years back brewed a Pisner with the contents of the urinals from a local music festival... https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2017/04/danish-brewery-to-release-pisner-beer/ One of the lads in our homebrew club bought along a couple of bottles for us to try one evening....was a ...

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
When i experienced wort fountains on my BM20 it was when mashing with low grain bills....4.25kg and below.....after maybe three occurrences I started adding 300-400g of rice hulls to my mash and never experienced the problem again.
