Re: Grainfather fermenter very slow heating
Thanks, yes I've popped a blanket around it for now. I've got some aluminium-ised bubble wrap that is pretty good, so I'll create a better fitting jacket using that, this evening. So it turns out there is a chart in the back of the manual that has an approximate heating guide ( link ). This shows, v...

Re: Grainfather fermenter very slow heating
Is the volume the same? Yes, well, actually it is slightly less, 24L vs 25L last December. I guess that not many people have this type of fermenter. I was hoping some other owners would be able to advise about the heating band, and might even have a batch fermenting themselves. I'll send a message ...

Re: Grainfather fermenter very slow heating
I found some stats from a brew I did last December. It went from 6.4C at midnight, to 13.3C at 18:45. So that's 7C in 19 hours. Right now it is at 17.8C, so that's up only 5.5C in 25 hours. I checked the weather for that day last year and conditions are very similar today, so I definitely think some...

Grainfather fermenter very slow heating
Hi All, I popped a batch into the conical fermenter last night and it is taking a very very long time to get up to heat. The temperature was 12.3C when it went into the FV, which was around 10pm last night. At 9am this morning it was only at 15.3C, so only a 3 degree increase, in almost 12 hours, an...

Re: iSpindel charging
I can answer my own question now, having buit the iSpindel. Charging is via the separate TP4056, but since the Wemos is also connected to the battery, when the cable is connected to the Wemos, it sends the 5V to the battery. Hence why they recomend to remove the diode. When posting the above questio...

Re: Porter with soapy off taste
Who's Palmer? Is he a member here on JBK? Got a link to his thread about soapy Porters? I must have missed that one. Sorry, John J Palmer's "How to Brew". I thought it was as ubiquitous as Wheelers BYOBRA. There is a partial on line version that I quoted from . I see I've been rumbled #-o Linoleic ...

iSpindel charging
Hi Guys, Not sure how many have built the iSpindel, I haven't assembed it yet, I'm just preparing the parts, but I'm a bit confused about charging the battery. Can the battery be charged while in place, just by plugging in the usb cable, or is the usb connector simply to allow the firmware to be upd...

Porter with soapy off taste
Hi Guys, So I'm tasting a porter I kegged a couple of days ago and it definitely has a slightly soapy taste. It might just be drinkable, not sure yet, but it is definitely and to me it is quite prominent, so I'm not sure yet. Its very young so I'm going to leave it a while to see if it goes away nat...

Re: Strangely low SG reading part way through fermentation
Hi Eric, Thanks for posting that and I am glad I read it all. So I definitely fall into the camp towards the bottom of the text, thinking that once I had "dialed in" my refractometer, and had my calibration factor, then that is all I needed to use. From that point on, I simply stopped using a hydrom...

Re: Strangely low SG reading part way through fermentation
Hi Guy, ok, thanks. that makes sense. The Python version is the "Wheelers Wort Works" version, which was re-rwritten in python after Graham Wheeler moved on. It is linked at the top of the forum extras page. It looks like that version doesn't have the refractometer feature....which explains why I c...

Re: Strangely low SG reading part way through fermentation
Jase: 30-35 ml? What refractometer do you use which needs a sample this size? No, I just took a larger sample into the glass, to ensure it was suitably mixed. I only needed a tiny tiny amount to go on the glass plate. Did it a few times to make sure it was accurate, tasted the sample (of course) an...

Re: Strangely low SG reading part way through fermentation
Took another sample this morning, a slightly larger one around 30-35 ml. This time the reading came in at 7.6B. So much more in line with what I would have expected. Perhaps it was because the previous sample was just too small, maybe only 1 or 2 ml, that it gave such a low reading. The conversion c...
