Re: Woodfordes Wherry Yeast

Are the 2 packets the same old yeast or a new strain ? I noticed yesterday in Wilko's Preston that Wherry was £17 !

Re: idea for mash tun

yes the mash will be up to temperature when I put it in the cupboard. Its just a way of keeping it steady in winter as the mashing takes place in a unheated garage. I might even put the transmitter in for my remote weather station so I can get a rough idea of temp from the house.

idea for mash tun

Just knocked together a heated fermenting cupboard from chip board and polystyrene sheet . in the bottom I installed a 60 w 12 " tublar heater. I wondered if I could fit my mash tun in ,stick the PTC sensor in the middle of mash and put the temperature up to 66C or so on the ATC800 ?. When the mash ...

Re: whitbread yeast from the sixties

It was in dry form and he said he used to hydrate it. It came down from London by train and he collected it at the station. he also said that the Lager yeast came by air from Denmark and came to Manchester airport.

whitbread yeast from the sixties

I started brewing in the late sixties after Reg Mauldling opened the flood gates for brewers. At the time I could only get yeast in a brown envelope with "beer yeast " printed on but had no idea were it came from ? then Whitbreads opened a new brewery down the road from me in Salemsbury Preston Lancs...

Re: Bottle cappers

Don't laugh at this but it works ! I had a black plastic 2 handled one (think it was a youngs ) but it soon became worn. I drilled out the rivets and removed the bit with the metal cup on that's all I used. This was screwed onto a 2 foot length of 3x2 about 6 inch from the end and a hinge was fasted...

S30 gas cylinders

I notice on the Leyland home brew web site that S30 exchange cylinders are only for personal collection from the shop. How do you go on if you live miles away from a shop and need one ? Does anyone supply on line and how do you get the old cylinder back ? John Brown

I have a very old burco which is square in shape with a round boiler inside ,holds 44 ltr and is rated at 3 Kw. The element is caked in carbon after forgetting to switch off before I added and stirred in DME !! I have got most of it off by soaking in Oxiclean and lots of scraping . What is the best ...

Black malt in Old Speck hen

Has anyone made AG version of old speckled hen from the Graham Wheeler book ? I find that using 30 g of black malt too much and gives a darker beer with a drier taste than the commercial product. The second time I made it I reduced it to 20g and it was better for me. The black malt I used was ready ...

Re: strike temperature

Thanks JIm. I used 2.5Ltr to each Kg of grain as in Graham Wheelers book but it most likely ended up as 3Ltr by the time extra hot water was added

strike temperature

I have 2 mash tuns both homemade and find both have the same problem. If I fill with water at 72c ( after heating the tun) adding the grain brings it down to about 63-64 and have to add hot water to get it back up to 66C I find I have to start at about 75-76 and then add grain to get a mash of 66c. ...

Re: Any groups in or around the Preston area?

Its a coincidence someone mentioned The Guild Ale house I'm just about to jump on the bus and go there ! I've known Gary for quite a while and he is a keen real ale man. PS in Lostock Hall we have a local Brewery ,Bishops Crook run by Dave Bishop and Ian Crook and Gary quite often has the brews on t...
