Re: Historical Mild Ale

I wish you luck, PeeBee, in your quest for the holy grail. Should you find it, may it be filled to overflowing with luscious mild ale. And please don't forget to post the recipe.

Re: Historical Mild Ale

Mild Ale - 2 - Post-1914 By the time of the First World War many things had changed in the brewing industry. Technological advances had made it a more scientific process, and easier, cheaper, inland transport extended the reach of large breweries. The small ale-house breweries had all but died out....

Re: Historical Mild Ale

Mild Ale - 1 - Pre-1914 The term 'mild' has been used to describe beers in the UK since at least the beginning of the 18th century, most probably well before then. In the CBA Factseet No. 6 'Old British Beers', Dr John Harrison wrote an article entitled 'Mild ales - what are they and where did they...

Re: Historical Mild Ale

Hey-up, PeeBee! You seem to be keeping the controversy going nicely! I'm not sure if you were throwing down a gauntlet to me or a soft woolly mitten, but I'll assume the latter. I’m coming in a bit late on this and I get the impression opinions are softening, but for what it’s worth I’ve prepared so...

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods

It's all getting a bit off-topic here. With regards to the history of Mild Ale, I get the feeling that there will always be divided opinions on this - history as a subject is ever thus, there is no absolute truth in it. But, thanks to Eric for the interesting reference to 1863 Newcastle mild ale, I'...

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods

Why does it have to be <3.5%ABV (4% absolute tops)? Because that's what Mild Ale is. someone better tell sarah hughes they been doing it wrong I have no doubt that the Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild Ale is an excellent pint and I would very much like to try it (and will do so one day). If they have go...

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods

OK, OK. I concede on the 'Pale Mild Ales' and have looked around for other examples. They are relatively uncommon until the whole modern trend for 'Golden Ales' kicks in and muddies the waters, but I'm absolutely not going to go that way. Pale Mild Ales exist and I'll doff me flat cap and plead for ...

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods

McMullen... Great picture, by the way, I loved it! Peebee... You are in danger here of contradicting your own previous arguments. I did say 'let's not get caught up in semantics', but I'm now going to. Pale Ale is a compound noun, it denotes something specific. Likewise Amber Ale. They can be preced...

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods
To say Mild didn't exist until well into the 20th Century is as bad as those that say Mild is 19th Century (and earlier) X-ales.
OK, Peebee. Point me to a Pre-1900 recipe for a dark, flavoursome beer that is under 3.5%ABV an...

Ah, Foob4r, many thanks for the tip. I reckon I'm going to try that one. 'Muttonchops Nut Brown Ale - it puts hairs on yer chest!' Although my Marketing Director might have trouble with that on the basis of sexual discrimination.

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods

Hi PeeBee. I've read the 'other' discussion you linked to from beginning to end - quite a journey! Whilst it makes some sense to add to that thread, it is now very old so it makes more sense to put it here. Much is made, quite rightly, of the impact of the first world war and also of the introductio...

Re: Historic Porter's, Stouts and Milds - Brewing Methods

A fascinating thread, as is the one that sparked it off (Mashing non-diastatic malt), so much so that I've come in off the sidelines to stick my oar in (if that isn't mixing metaphors). Friends have sometimes asked me what the difference is between Porter and Stout, a question that I have even somet...
