Thanks both for the responses, appreciated. My alkalinity is about the same as yours, vacant. I'm not on a water meter so from the money side of things I don't care, but don't want to waste water. I like the idea of using it later on through the cooler.
Paul.

Reverse Osmosis filter, advice sought
Hi folks, After a number of years of reasonably successful brewing with the rock-hard water here in Hertfordshire, I want to invest in an RO filter and build up my brewing water from scratch. I have been researching RO filter systems and frankly I'm a bit overwhelmed with it all. What I'm looking fo...

Re: Hertford Brew Club (HBC)
An excellent club, I can recommend (speaking as one of the founder members). One of our recent highlights was some "community outreach" (I think that's what its called these days). Our local brewery McMullens gave us a stall in their courtyard at the local food and drink festival and we served a lar...

Re: Greg Hughes Amarillo
I do much the same except I tend to use Warrior for bittering - it's got a good "clean" bitterness that I enjoy and isn't too expensive.

Re: BM and efficiency
I'm another fairly recent convert to full volume mashing. I do let the malt pipe drain out into a vessel for half an hour though and that does collect a fair mount of extra wort. I haven't noticed anything wrong with efficiency though I'm not one for calculating everything to the nth degree. My OG n...

Re: Founders All Day IPA?
I've just finished a brew day today on the Braumeister, trying Seymour's original recipe from the start of the thread. I was amazed by the whole US IPA revolution when I visited Boulder in 2014, but was also rather surprised at the high ABV of a typical beer. I suppose it explains why the locals see...

Re: Braumeister & pre-crushed malt
Just to add to this, I've had zero problems with Malt Miller crushed malt for about 15 brews so far... I don't do ultra high gravity brews mind, about 6kg malt is the max for me in a 20L BM.

Have to agree... a nice box of toys arrived yesterday (including a shiny new cornelius keg... that's me up to 3 now, they are breeding!). First class service and great prices - long may it continue!

Re: Windsor - time to clear in barrel?
Thanks for the reply, flything. I would never have thought of your idea of cooling/clearing in the fermenter then pitching a different yeast for priming in the keg. Interesting. I don't have the facilities to cool the keg as you suggest, so I'll keep trying it as it is every week or so (it's a hard ...

Windsor - time to clear in barrel?
Hi all, After quite a few successful all grain brews using S04, I decided to experiment with different yeasts. I made up the Youngs Special recipe from GW, with Windsor yeast, and stuck it in a bottom tap kingkeg about 8 weeks ago. I've just drawn off a half pint as a late Friday afternoon reward, a...

Re: Off The Salifert Table
My water's off the scale too (in Hertford here, not Hereford!). I found that if you use the "lower resolution" method described in the leaflet, where you use 2ml of water and just one drop of the dye, you can get a reading and you then have to multiply the answer by two. In my case I normally end up...

Re: GWs Guiness
I had the last pint of a barrel of this last night... some people at my archery club tried it too and it was universally very well liked. It's a winner, I'll definitely be making it again.

Re: Theakston Old perculiar
I know this isn't the right thread to say this in (and apologies to the OP) but Graham, your book has been my bible in the last 12 months (ish) that I've been doing all grain and I couldn't have done without it, so thank you very much. I also was thinking along the "print on demand" lines and was go...
