Re: New Wilko Artisan Brewing Kits
I think that we may be talking about slightly different things. My 'Nothing special' comment was really aimed at the type of bottled light ales that were very popular in the 50s and 60s and were still around when I started drinking, and indeed, working in pubs. DS Hophead on cask and Oakham JHB aren...

Doesn't that rather define a light ale?

Re: Grainfather - first impressions
If it really annoys you, it doesn't make a great deal of difference if you don't bother with the bottom seal. The easiest way I've found of fitting it is to leave the tube in the liquor as it comes up to temperature and to cool the bottom plate in the freezer for a few minutes. Lift the tube, fit th...

Shall we see how long we can keep this thread going?
I'll be the Percy Pedant who points out that, although the scales use units of mass what they actually measure is the gravity force acting on the mass, that is weight.

Re: Weight of a single Campden Tablet
Being the helpful sort, I've just weighed some, and one tablet is half a gram.
I suspect though, that CTs have some additional filler, so it may not be a direct read across to the powder. For what it is worth, I use the powder too for knocking out chlorine, and I just go with an imperial pinch.

Re: Hercules hop.
If you're googling for info, you may have more luck with Herkules (German spelling). I got some from B&T a few years. They told me that they use it in their stouts, so I did the same. Given its high AA I thought that it may be a bit rough for aroma additions so I didn't try it. Perhaps I should have...

Is Luton too far?
If not, try Compton Gas. £25 deposit and £20 for the gas, IIRC.

Marston's Pedigree bottle conditioned
This has just been announced as part of a rather unpleasant rebranding exercise.
Will it be the original brewing yeast, or a disappointing bottling strain?

Don't forget that you can also try propagating the cuttings. Not guaranteed to work, but worth a go.

I think that the amount of vinegar needs to reflect the alkalinity of the water, otherwise the buffering effect prevents it from lowering the PH sufficiently.

Languages are constantly changing, evolving and developing so prescriptive approaches are ultimately based on what is generally accepted within a given community of speakers.
