Closest CML match for Muntons gold

Hi all As the title. I've "inherited" a few Muntons kits and am interested which CML yeast would be a best match for the gold yeast that accompanies the kit. I hope it's not 4 as I've never been a fan. There's something about it that never tastes quite right, to me anyway. I have used a single 6g sa...

Critch's original profile/account has been deactivated but there's a recent Critch, he was last "active" on here 22nd Jan 2020. The original account may have been lost due to inactivity or one of the forum upgrades?
It might be him, wouldn't hurt to send him a message

Re: Higsons Bitter recipe

A bit of a long shot but....... Kark Critchley may be able to give you an update/guidance. He was head brewer for Liverpool Organic Brewery and remains in his post after they were financially rescued by Liverpool Brewing Company. They used to brew Higsons Best Bitter at Organic. Not sure if they con...

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

So since I can get diastatic malt powder here can this be used to make a mini mash. If so how much per litre would I need? Would it be a general answer of say 15g per litre. Or do the enzymes reproduce during mashing? Diastatic malt, either dried or liquid will do the job well. I wouldn't have a cl...

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

Torrefied wheat needs to be mashed along with something like pale malt as it doesn't have the enzymes to convert itself if mashed on it's own.
Not sure about the head retention properties of flaked oats but it's certainly used for mouth feel (body).

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

Wheat malt extract is readily available from several places but unfortunately I can't locate one selling a ready converted extract of torrefied wheat.
It's main use if for mouth feel and head retention so you could simply leave it out if it's only a small inclusion

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

The difference is that the black sheep best bitter recipe has an addition of torrefied wheat which needs to be included in a mash to extract the sugars and at the time of writing was unlikely to be available in extract form. Now however I'm sure it is from one or more of the online retailers. Your m...

California Connoisseur/On the House Red wine kits

Hi all Has anyone noticed any changes (good or bad) since they changed to the new production method a while ago and reduced the volume of juice per kit? I usually shop at the £35 ish mark for my reds but have just "treated" myself to a couple of On the House kits with some birthday funds. I've done ...

Re: Wherry at Wikinsons stores

Of the 20 beer kits listed on their website they only show stock for 3. The situation is almost as bad for the wine kits.
Supply problems maybe?

Re: Wilko Pressure Barrel Valve.

If I remember correctly, back in the old days, the pins either pulled straight out or unscrewed. Although the new ones may have has the design simplified slightly to make them cheaper to manufacture, possibly preventing removal?
